Battle of the ODAC top two teams as 8th ranked EMU drops exciting battle against 12th ranked Lynchbu

HARRISONBURG, Va. – One of the biggest rivals in Division III field hockey took place today in Harrisonburg. Eighth ranked Eastern Mennonite versus twelfth ranked Lynchburg billed as the ODAC Championship match did not disappoint the 125 in attendance to watch these two field hockey goliaths battle.

The score was knotted at zero after the first period until Andrea Fleming gave Lynchburg the lead, off an assist from Becky Skoda in the 59th minute. EMU responded with a goal of its own off a penalty stroke. Jonalyn Denlinger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) went high stick side and tied the score at one a piece with only two minutes to go in the second half.

Both teams were unable to score in the final minutes as the match went into sudden victory. EMU had a chance five minutes into overtime, but was thwarted by a strong defensive save from Susan Casperson. Lynchburg took advantage and with six minutes and three seconds into overtime, Skoda scored off a penalty stroke to give Lynchburg the win.

With the loss EMU drops to 2-1 overall while Lynchburg improves to a perfect 4-0. EMU will be in action Wednesday, September 18 at Randolph Macon Woman's College. Their next match at home will be Tuesday, September 24 vs. Sweet Briar College.
