Three Royals Secure Hat Tricks but LAX Drops OT Heartbreaker at Guilford

GREENSBORO, NC - Saturday was a career day for a pair of Royals, even if the final score didn't exactly turn out how EMU LAX was hoping.

Kaylene Todd and Ava Schwartz both scored their first career hat tricks, but a goal from the Quakers less than two minutes into overtime pushed Guilford to a 13-12 win over EMU.

Records: EMU 1-12, 1-6 ODAC | Guilford 7-7, 2-4 ODAC

Highlights

First Quarter
  • The Quakers got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead less than two minutes into the game. EMU responded on the very next possession when Todd won the draw and the Royals got the ball into the GC offensive zone. Shayleigh Sims was fouled, giving her a free position shot that she buried, tying the game at one apiece.
  • A few minutes later Todd scored her first of the game after a shot from Guilford hit the post and Alyssa Hunter came up with the ground ball. The Quakers scored back-to-back goals with just over five minutes left in the quarter, but EMU tied things up once again when Hailey Walker's shot on the next possession found the back of the net.
Second Quarter
  • The tie was broken just 19 seconds into the second quarter and at the 11:21 mark, another GC goal pushed their lead to two. But EMU answered right back as A. Walker put in her 17th goal of the season, which was followed at 6:59 and 5:24 by back-to-back Todd goals, putting the Royals ahead 6-5.
  • Guilford retook the lead with two quick goals, but Hunter came up with a big save late in the frame to keep EMU within striking distance, as GC took a 7-6 lead into the break.
Third Quarter
  • Schwartz picked a great time for her first of three goals, tying the game at seven with just over 12 minutes left in the third. Hunter added three more saves over the next 11 minutes, while EMU's offense was able to reclaim the lead with late goals from Schwartz, off an assists from A. Walker, and A. Walker, off an assist from Liliana Guerrero.
  • But Guilford scored twice in the final 1:42 of the quarter, sending things to the fourth all tied up.
Fourth Quarter and Overtime
  • The fourth quarter was set up to be a doozy, as both teams continued to be strong offensively. A Quaker goal early on put them in front 10-9, but it didn't last long as EMU scored two straight: one from Joelle Blosser and one just 44 seconds later from Schwartz.
  • Hunter came up with a big save and, with just over four minutes left, A. Walker secured her third goal of the game and gave EMU some breathing room. But the Quakers scored goal on the next two possessions to force another tie. Hunter came up with a monster save on a free position shot with just nine seconds left in the game, sending the game to overtime.
  • EMU never even got to touch the ball in the extra period, as Guilford won the opening draw and scored on their first possession of OT to secure the win.
