Spirited Effort by Royals Comes Up Short in Home Defeat to Randolph Macon

HARRISONBURG, Va.- Emerging from hibernation after days stuck at home due to winter weather, the EMU Women's Basketball team picked up where they left on the ODAC schedule, welcoming Randolph Macon into Yoder Arena on Wednesday. The Royals was out front after the first quarter, but they could not hold the lead as the Yellow Jackets prevailed by a final score 56-41.  

Grace Burke put up double figures for the Royals with 10 points, while Anabelle Simmons had a solid stat line of seven points and seven rebounds.

For Randolph Macon, Erin Porter led all scorers with 12 points, followed closely by Sam Smith with 11 and McKenzie Matheny with 10.

Highlights
First Quarter
After a Randolph Macon free throw to open the scoring, the Royals scored the next seven points unanswered. Townsend accounted for five of those seven points, swishing a three-pointer at the 6:40 mark and a driving layup with 5:10 remaining, with a Burke layup sandwiched in between those two baskets. The score was 9-8 when Jada Waller swished a driving layup at the 2:42 mark. The Yellow Jackets then sank a three-pointer to tie the game at 11, but Jayda Jones answered for the Royals with a driving layup to give EMU a 13-11 lead.

Second Quarter
The Yellow Jackets took ownership of the second quarter, outscoring the Royals 16-5 in that 10-minute span. It started with a 7-0 run that spanned the opening 3:40 of the second quarter. Waller stemmed the tide with a two-point jumper to bring EMU back within three points, 18-15. However, Randolph Macon responded with a 6-0 run to go up by 10 points, 25-15. Lauren Mayn added a driving layup and Townsend sank a free throw in the final minute, but it was Randolph Macon that took the 27-18 halftime lead.

Third Quarter
Jazmyn Taylor opened the second half scoring with a layup, but then Randolph Macon assumed control with a 13-0 that spanned 4:12 of game time. That put the Yellow Jackets up 40-20 with 4:!4 left in the third quarter. Burke stymied the run with a three-pointer with 1:31 remaining, but the Royals faced a tall mountain to climb, trailing 45-23 after three quarters.

Fourth Quarter
Both teams emptied the bench to get players more game experience in the fourth quarter. The Royals closed the game on a 6-0 run to eat into the Yellow Jackets' cushion. Simmons scored all seven of her points in the final 3:38 of the game, but it was too little, too late to make the comeback.

What's Next
