Royals Fall in Saturday Tri-Match

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Royals wrapped up the weekend at home on Saturday, welcoming in Marymount and Virginia Union for a tri-match. 

In the opener, the Saints picked up a 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-15) win over EMU. In the finale, the Panthers were also victorious, taking down EMU 3-1 (8-25, 25-13, 27-25, 26-24).

Highlights

Set One: Marymount 25, EMU 12
  • EMU jumped out to a 5-2 lead to start the match, using a kill from Emma Greer and four Saints errors to take the lead. A kill from Emma Rogers would put the Royals on top 6-3, but MU would answer with an 11-0 run, pulling ahead 14-6. 
  • Kills from Logan Turchetta and Kaitlyn Custis, along with an Emerson Moats ace, would pull the Royals back within five, 16-11, but the Saints would finish out the set on a 9-1 tilt to take a 1-0 set lead. 
Set Two: Marymount 25, EMU 19
  • The Royals pulled ahead early again in set two, with Kenley Smith picking up a kill. 
  • The teams traded points to EMU leading late, 17-16, after a block from Turchetta and Rogers, along with another Smith kill. But just like in the first set, Marymount would go on a late run, this time 9-2, to take a 2-0 match lead. 
Set Three: Marymount 25, EMU 15
  • This time it was Marymount that pulled out to an early lead, pulling ahead 5-2, before a Saint error and kills from Greer and Jada Parker tied things at five apiece. 
  • The teams traded points to MU leading 10-8, and they extended their lead with a 9-2 run, before a kill from Smith stopped the run and added to EMU's score. Marymount responded with another run, this time 5-0, to pull to match point, 24-11. 
  • EMU wasn't ready to stop playing, winning the next four points off kills from Custis and Rogers, along with Claire Reichenbach ace, but a Saints kill wrapped up the sweep for Marymount.

EMU vs Virginia Union

Highlights

Set One: EMU 25, VUU 8
  • The Royals dominated the first set, taking a 4-1 lead through the first five points, using three Panther errors and two Smith kills. 
  • VUU was able to pull within two, 6-4, before EMU went on an 8-0 run, highlighted by kills from Turchetta and Rogers, and three straight aces from Moats. The Panthers picked up three straight, but the Royals finished things off with an 11-1 tilt, including five service aces from Custis, for a 1-0 lead. 
Set Two: VUU 25, EMU 13
  • EMU took an early lead, 8-5, through the first 13 points, picking up kills from Smith, Rogers, Parker and Ella Lambert. The Panthers responded with a 12-0 run, taking a 17-8 lead and making EMU use both of their timeouts. 
  • Smith and Turchetta picked up kills, but VUU finished out the set with an 8-5 run, tying things at one apiece. 
Set Three: VUU 27, EMU 25
  • A Panther error, a Smith kill and a Rebecca Allen ace put EMU ahead 3-0 to start the third. VUU rallied with an 11-0 run to take an eight-point lead. 
  • The teams swapped points to VUU leading 15-7, then the Royals went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a pair of kills from Turchetta, a Rogers ace and a block from Rogers and Turchetta. 
  • EMU eventually pulled even, tying things at 17, before the Panthers took a 21-18 lead. EMU won five of the next six points, including three service aces. The Royals had set point at 24-23, but couldn't close things out, as VUU pulled ahead 25-24. A Panther error tied things at 25, but back-to-back kills gave Virginia Union the set win and a 2-1 lead. 
Set Four: VUU 26, EMU 24
  • Neither team was able to grab much momentum, as Virginia Union held onto a one-point lead, 9-8, early on. Back-to-back errors put EMU in the lead, but the Panthers responded, re-taking the lead, 15-13. 
  • The Royals scored four straight, including kills from Smith and Lambert, to take a 17-15 advantage. After swapping leads to EMU leading 22-20 after a Custis/Rogers block, the Panthers surged ahead with a 3-0 run. A Smith kill and a Custis ace pushed EMU to set point, but the Panthers finished things out, winning the final three points for the win.
