Baseball Falls to Bridgewater in Latest Rendition of Route 42 Rivalry

HARRISONBURG, Va. – After a rough road trip to Messiah, the EMU Baseball team sought to turn their fortunes around at home on Wednesday, hosting crosstown rival Bridgewater at Royals Field. However, the Diamond Royals never led as the Eagles flew back south of town with a 15-6 victory over EMU. This extends the Royals' losing streak to six in a row.

Highlights
  • The teams traded scoreless frames in the first inning, but the second inning was a completely different story. Bridgewater built a 6-0 lead in the top half, with five of those coming on three separate home runs.
  • The Royals cut the deficit in half with three runs in the bottom half of the second. Noah Sanderson got EMU going with a base hit through the right side, bringing home both Dylan Hall and Dalton Rocke. Erik Wilkinson then drew a bases loaded walk that allowed Sanderson to touch home plate, which made the score Bridgewater 6, EMU 3 after two innings.
  • Following a scoreless third inning, the Royals chipped away at the Eagles' lead with one run in the fourth. Wilkinson continued to produce for EMU, knocking a single through the right side to bring in Nick Arnold and draw the Royals within two at 6-4. But Bridgewater brought in two runs in the fifth and another in the sixth to grow their lead to five at 9-4.
  • Sanderson added a run for EMU in the seventh, doubling down the right field line to plate Josh Gjormand. Through seven innings, the score was Bridgewater 9, EMU 5.
  • The Eagles flew away from the Royals in the eighth inning, racking up six more runs in the top half. The Royals could only respond with one run of their own in the bottom half before the game was called due to darkness.
