Royals Falter Late in Heartbreaking Loss at Huntingdon

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The EMU Baseball Team embarked on its spring break road trip Tuesday, heading to Alabama's capital city to do battle with Huntingdon College. The Royals built up an early lead, but it was all for naught as the Hawks came back late to hand EMU a 12-11 defeat.

Of note, Noah Sanderson had a career day at the dish, going 3-for-3 with a double, a two-run home run, and 3 RBIs. Nick Arnold continued the strong start to his final season, tacking on 5 RBIs, three of which came on his third home run of the season.

LP: Marcus Smith (0-1)

Highlights
  • The Royals roared out of the gates, with Chris Polymeropoulos and Aidan Miller both getting on base to set up Arnold's three-run home run in the top of the first. EMU then doubled their lead in the second, thanks to an RBI single by Miller, an Arnold sac fly, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Daniel McGinnis.
  • After the Hawks got two runs back in the bottom of the fourth, the Royals grew their lead with four more runs in the sixth inning. The first two runs came on Sanderson's home run, the first of his collegiate career. Arnold then got his second sacrifice fly of the game, followed closely by an RBI triple by McGinnis that brought home Miller.
  • Sanderson kept up his stellar performance at the plate with an RBI double in the top of the seventh. That brought in Erik Wilkinson to make it an 11-2 game in favor of the Royals.
  • However, the Hawks began their comeback with three runs in the eighth, which set the stage for their rally in the bottom of the ninth. Try as they might, the Royals' bullpen could not stop Huntingdon's bats, and the Hawks walked it off with a two-RBI single from Brent Honaker.
