Royals Drop ODAC Opener to VWU

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The EMU Women's Volleyball team make the trek east on Wednesday, heading to the beach for their ODAC opener. 

It was the Marlins, who are receiving votes in this weeks AVCA poll, who picked up the 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-12) win. 

Records: EMU 2-4, 0-1 ODAC | RV Virginia Wesleyan 7-0, 1-0 ODAC

Highlights

Set One - EMU 14, VWU 25
  • VWU started the first set leading 9-3 before EMU went on a 3-0 run, picking up an error and two service aces from Mara Woolford
  • The Marlins responded with a 7-2 tilt, taking a 16-8 advantage. EMU scored four of the next five points, using kills from Laney Cline and Woolford, to pull within five at 17-12. 
  • A service error and another Cline kill would be all EMU would be able to get, as VWU ended the set on a 7-2 run, for the set win. 
Set Two - EMU 14, VWU 25
  • A kill from Cline and a Marlin error put EMU ahead 2-0 to start the second set. VWU answered with a 5-1 tilt for the 5-3 lead. 
  • Back-to-back VWU errors tied the match at five, and the teams traded points before EMU took a one-point lead off a Marlin error and an ace from Madison Stockner. The teams traded points again to 9-9, before a 10-1 VWU run gave them a 19-10 advantage. 
  • EMU was able to secure the next three points, with two kills from Cline and a Virginia Wesleyan error, to pull within six. The Royals added a block from Stockner and Woolford, but VWU took a 2-0 lead with the final three points of the set. 
Set Three - EMU 12, VWU 25
  • Three kills from Cline and two Marlin errors, gave EMU an early 5-3 lead in the third set. Later, with things tied at five, a Sophia Denby kill and a Woolford ace, pushed EMU to a 7-5 advantage. 
  • Virginia Wesleyan answered with an 8-0 run, taking the lead. EMU was able to claw back in and pull within four, highlighted by kills from Kassidy Meadows and Lindsay Bly, along with another Stocker ace, but VWU would wrap up the set with EMU picking up two more points as the Marlins won their ODAC opener.

What's Next
EMU will be back on the court on Saturday, when they welcome in Roanoke and Wilson College for a tri-match. First serve against the Maroons is set for noon.
