Women's Volleyball Splits Pair on Saturday

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HARRISONBURG, Va. - EMU kicked off the weekend with a tri-match on Saturday, taking on Roanoke College and Wilson College in non-conference play. 

The Royals battled the Maroons in the opener, but ultimately fell in five sets (25-21, 22-25, 24-26, 25-13, 15-9) before rebounding to sweep Wilson (25-16, 25-18, 25-15) in the day's final match.

Highlights

Set One: Roanoke 25, EMU 21
  • Roanoke jumped out to an 8-2 lead in set one, before EMU won four of the next six points from kills by Madison Stockner and Sophia Denby, along with an Emma Greer block, to cut their lead to three. 
  • EMU then went on a 10-7 run, to pull within one at 17-16, before Roanoke answered with three straight to extend their lead back to four. 
  • Late in the set, with Roanoke leading by five, EMU would score three of four, using kills from Denby and Kenley Smith to make the score 24-21, but Roanoke wrapped up the set with a kill for a 1-0 lead. 
Set Two: EMU 25, Roanoke 22
  • Neither team was able to lead by more than three to start the second set, with Roanoke holding onto a 7-6 advantage, before scoring three straight to push their lead to 10-6. 
  • RC would continue to lead by four, to 13-9, before EMU went on a big 8-1 run, highlighted by kills from Denby, Laney Cline and Mara Woolford, along with a block from Cline and Smith, to take a 17-14 lead. 
  • The two teams traded points to EMU holding a slim 22-21 lead, before two Maroon errors and a Denby kill tied the match at one set apiece. 
Set Three: EMU 26, Roanoke 24
  • Roanoke came out firing in the third set, taking an early lead and holding it for most of the set. At one point, the Maroons led by as many as eight, 19-11, and led 20-13, before EMU made its move. 
  • EMU reeled off a 10-1 run, picking up kills from Denby and Smith, a block from Greer and Smith and three straight aces from Stockner, to take a 23-21 lead and steal the momentum from Roanoke. 
  • The Maroons tied the set at 23 and 24, forcing extra points, but it wouldn't take many as EMU won the final two with an error and a Woolford kill, for a 2-1 lead. 
Set Four: Roanoke 25, EMU 13
  • In the fourth, Roanoke started the set on a 9-3 run, before an error and a Kaitlyn Custis ace pulled EMU back within four. 
  • EMU would get within three after kills from Woolford and Cline, but RC went on a 6-1 run to extend their lead back 9, 18-9.
  • At the end of the set, EMU was able to cut into the lead with kills from Woolford and Denby, but Roanoke forced a fifth set with an EMU error. 
Set Five: Roanoke 15, EMU 9
  • Kills from Cline and Smith put EMU on top early in the fifth set, and they were able to pull ahead by one, 6-5 midway through. Roanoke came back with a 5-1 tilt, taking a 10-7 lead. 
  • An RC error brought EMU back to within two, 10-8, but the Maroons reeled off five of the next six points to pick up the close 3-2 match win.

Highlights

Set One: EMU 25, Wilson 16
  • The teams swapped points to start the match, and Wilson held a slight 7-5 lead through the first 12 points. But EMU responded with five of the next six, using a kill from Smith, a block from Smith and Cline and two Lindsay Bly aces, to take a 10-8 lead. 
  • Wilson would keep in striking distance until, with EMU leading 15-13, the Royals went on a 6-0 run to take a 21-13 lead. Wilson was able to cut the lead to five, but the Royals wrapped up the set with the final four points, using two errors, a Custis ace and a block from Smith and Cline, for a 1-0 lead. 
Set Two: EMU 25, Wilson 18
  • A 6-2 EMU run highlighted the start of the second set, as the Royals took an 8-4 lead. 
  • Once again, Wilson kept EMU in sight, trailing just 16-13, before EMU took over just like in the first set, this time going on a 5-1 run, highlighted by a Woolford ace, to extend their lead to seven. 
  • Wilson was able to bring the lead back down to six, but kills from Cline and Smith put the set out of each and gave EMU a 2-0 lead. 
Set Three: EMU 25, Wilson 15
  • Once again, things seemed even to start the third, with both teams' offense showing effectiveness. EMU used two kills from Denby and another Bly ace, to pull ahead by two, before Wilson tied things up with two straight. 
  • EMU retook the lead, and, leading by one at 12-11, went on a 5-1 tilt, using kills from Smith, Cline, Bly and Woolford, to push their lead to 17-12. 
  • With the Royals leading 18-14, Wilson would only muster one more point in the set, as EMU ended the match on a 7-1 run, and a kill from Smith, to wrap up the sweep.

EMU will continue ODAC play on Tuesday, when they take on Hollins inside Yoder Arena. First serve against the Green and Gold is set for 7 pm.
