Strong Pitching, Timely Hitting, Propels Royals to DH Sweep

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Fresh after splitting with #24 Lynchburg on Saturday, the Royals welcome in Ferrum College for a Sunday ODAC doubleheader. 

In game one, Natalye Graham was strong in the circle and Samantha Hensley, Makayla Cyzick and Braxten Jones each drove in a pair of runs as EMU picked up a 7-2 win. In game two, Cyzick tossed a gem in the circle and Destiny Jones drove in three as the Royals picked up a 4-0 shutout.

Highlights
  • Graham sat the Panthers down in order in the top of the first and the Royals bats stayed hot in the bottom. Hensley led off with a triple and Taylor Umberger singled back to the pitcher. Grace Fravel singled to the left side, plating Hensley, and then, with two outs, B. Jones doubled to drive in Umberger, to give EMU a 2-0 lead after one. 
  • The Royals added to their lead in the second when Graham led off with a double, moved to third on Brooke Morris' groundout and came in to score on Hensley's second hit of the day, an RBI single up the middle. Ferrum got one back in the fourth when their cleanup hitter launched a homerun over the left field fence, but Graham got a groundout to keep EMU's lead at two. 
  • In the Royals half of the fourth, Emerson Adkins led off with a single up the middle, moved to second on a sac bunt and scored on Hensley's third hit, a single down the first base line. In the bottom of the fifth, EMU extended their lead when B. Jones' single plated D. Jones, putting the Royals ahead 5-1. 
  • In the top of the sixth, Ferrum was able to load the bases with just one out, but Graham struck out the final two batters to keep Ferrum at just one run. EMU wrapped up their scoring in the bottom of the sixth when Cyzick drove in a pair of runs with a base hit to right field. In the seventh, Ferrum scratched a run across to cut EMU's lead to five, but a flyout to right field ended the game and secured the Royals win. 
  • Graham's second strikeout of the game gave her 200 for her career.

EMU vs Ferrum - Game Two

Highlights
  • Cyzick gave up a two-out double and a walk in the first, but EMU got out of the inning as the Panthers made a mental error and B. Jones threw out the runner at first as she was attempting to steal second. EMU jumped out ahead once again in their half of the first after Hensley walked and Umberger doubled, putting runners on second and third. D. Jones drove both runners in with a single up the middle for a 2-0 EMU lead. 
  • Cyzick struck out the side in the second, gave up just a walk in the third and a single in the fourth, but allowed no runs to keep EMU in the lead. In the fifth, Ferrum was able to put two runners on after an error and a single, but a line out and a groundout kept the shutout intact. 
  • In the bottom of the fifth, EMU tacked on an insurance run after Morris and Hensley walked and D. Jones drove in her third run of the day with a single to right-center, for a 3-0 lead. Cyzick helped her cause with a monster leadoff homerun in the sixth, for a 4-0 lead. Then, in the seventh, Cyzick worked around a one-out walk, striking out the final two batters for the win.

What's Next
EMU will head to Bridgewater on Tuesday, to finish up their suspended game from last Wednesday. They'll start in the top of the fifth with the tying run on second base. Resumption will start at 5 pm.
