Royals Swept By #12 Virginia Wesleyan

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Royals softball team went to the beach on Wednesday, but strictly for business as they took on the 12th ranked Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan.

In game one, it was VWU getting the best of the EMU, 6-0, while in game two, the Marlins starting pitching was strong, holding EMU scoreless in an 8-0 win.

EMU vs #12 Virginia Wesleyan – Game One

Highlights
  • The Royals went down in order in the top of the first, and VWU was able to score three in their half of the inning, using a two-RBI triple and a sac fly, to take a 3-0 lead.
  • In the second, Braxten Jones led off with a walk, Emerson Adkins singled and Natalye Graham walked to load the bases, but a popout and a strikeout ended the threat.
  • Samantha Hensley led off the third with a single, but was erased on a double 4-6-3 double play. VWU was able to add to their lead in the bottom of the third, scoring a run on a wild pitch for a 4-0 lead. In the fourth, Cyzick was able to work out of a jam as Grace Fravel threw a runner out at home and Cyzick induced a popout.
  • The Marlins scored their final two runs in the sixth, with an RBI double and a sac fly, to push their lead to 6-0. Adkins walked in the top of the seventh, and moved to third after a groundout and a Destiny Jones single, but a popout to third kept the shutout for VWU.

Highlights
  • The Royals put a runner on to start the first inning of game two, as Hensley reached on a fielding error, but a pair of groundouts and a strikeout kept EMU off the board. The Marlins scored three in their half of the first after a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases. Another walk scored the first run, followed by two more crossing the plate on a fielding error, giving VWU a 3-0 lead.
  • The Marlins added a fourth run in the fourth, on an RBI sac bunt, giving them a 4-0 lead. EMU got its first hit of the game in the top of the sixth, when Hensley roped a one-out single up the middle. Taylor Umberger followed that up by reaching on a fielder's choice, putting runners at first and second. Fravel grounded out, putting runners on second and third before D. Jones was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. But a groundout to the second baseman ended the Royals inning. The Marlins walked it off in the bottom of the sixth, plating four runs for the six-inning win.

What's Next
EMU will return home on Saturday when they take on Sweet Briar College in an ODAC doubleheader. First pitch against the Vixens is set for 1 pm.
