Royals Drop Pair to Quakers

GREENSBORO, NC – After rain postponed the first matchup between these two teams, the Royals and Quakers finally met up on Wednesday, in a pivotal ODAC showdown.

In game one, Guilford used 10 runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pick up an 11-3 five-inning win. Game two saw GC score early, putting up three runs in each of the first three innings en route to an 11-6 win.

Records:
EMU 11-19, 5-14 ODAC | Guilford College 17-20, 9-10 ODAC

WP: S. Gray (9-5)
LP: Makayla Cyzick (8-13)

Highlights
  • Samantha Hensley wasted no time in getting EMU on the board. In the game's opening at-bat, Hensley smashed her third homerun of the year, putting the Royals on top 1-0. Makayla Cyzick worked around a one-out double in the bottom of the first, keeping the Quakers off the board. Both teams were able to get on base with hits in the second, but no runs were pushed across, keeping the Royals in the lead.
  • EMU extended their lead in the third when Hensley led off with a single, moved around to third on back-to-back groundouts and came in on an error by the Quaker third baseman off a ball hit by Cyzick. In the Guilford half of the third, Cyzick got two quick out, but a double and a single scored a run, cutting EMU's lead to 2-1.
  • EMU went down in order in the fourth, and Guilford struck for three runs, to take a 4-2 advantage. But the Royals cut into that in the top of the fifth as Hensley deposited a ball over the center field fence for her second homerun of the game. Unfortunately for EMU, Guilford was able to put up a seven-spot in the bottom of the fifth, walking it off on a bases loaded triple.

WP: T. Mitchell (1-0)
LP: Natalye Graham (3-6)

Highlights
  • It was déjà vu all over again for EMU, as Hensley led off game two with a solo homerun, her third of the day, giving EMU a 1-0 lead. D. Jones followed that up with a walk, moved to second on a groundout, stole third and came in to score when Cyzick reached base on an error, putting the Royals up 2-0. The Quakers struck back with three in their half of the first, using a single and a double to drive in three for a 3-2 lead.
  • The Royals tied things up at three in the second when Emerson Adkins walked, moved to third when Graham reached on an error and came in to score on Brooke Morris' RBI bunt single. But once again, Guilford's offense didn't go quietly, adding three more runs in the second and third and holding EMU scoreless in the third, for a 9-3 lead.
  • Neither team scored in the fourth, but GC was able to scratch across another run in the fifth, making it 10-3. But EMU started to chip away in the top of the sixth, as Adkins led off with a walk and Graham and Morris both singled to load the bases. Hensley walked, scoring Adkins, D. Jones reached on an error, plating Graham and Cyzick drove in a run with a sac fly, to cut Guilford's lead to 10-6. An RBI single in the bottom of the sixth pushed the Quakers lead back to five and the Royals went down in order in the seventh for GC's win.
