BALTIMORE, Md.- After playing the role as hosts during the opening weekend, it was the EMU Women's Basketball team's turn to hit the road, traveling to Baltimore, Md., for the Renie Amoss Tip-off Tournament, hosted by Goucher College. The Royals' stay in The Charm City got off to a cheery start, as the team used a monstrous 15-4 scoring run in the final six minutes to topple previously undefeated Bryn Mawr 72-56.
Three EMU players scored in double figures, led by
Grace Burke's 22-point performance that included four three-pointers.
Jeriyah Osborne was right behind Burke with 21 points on the evening, shooting an impressive 50 percent (7-of-14) from the field.
Jayla Gray made her presence felt inside to the tune of 11 points and five offensive rebounds.
Records: EMU 2-1 | Bryn Mawr 4-1
Highlights
First Quarter
The Owls flew out of the gates quickly, opening up a 9-0 lead on EMU before Coach
Jenny Posey called a timeout with 5:40 remaining in the frame. That timeout proved to be a wise decision as the Royals closed out the quarter on an incredible 21-2 scoring run.
Laila Glymph began the rally with a layup at the 5:20 mark, followed by a basket by
Lexie Dingus with 4:06 left in the period.
Grace Burke contributed the most to the rally, totaling 11 points in the quarter, including three three-pointers. Burke put the exclamation point on the run with back-to-back three-pointers in the final 30 seconds of the quarter. As a result of the offensive surge, the Royals went into the second quarter up 21-11.
Second Quarter
EMU carried the positive momentum over to the start of the second quarter, opening up the scoring in that frame with a
Jeriyah Osborne three-pointer. However, Bryn Mawr countered with a 7-0 scoring run over a 1:10 span to draw back within two scores at 24-18. But again, the Royals had an answer by swishing five out of six free throws, two each from Osborne and Burke as well as one from
Lauren Townsend. Townsend also nailed a three-pointer immediately following a Bryn Mawr layup to put EMU back up by double digits at 32-22. The pesky Owls refused to go away, ending the half on a 5-1 run of their own to make it a 33-27 game at the half.
Third Quarter
The Royals roared out of the locker room, opening up the second half on a 10-0 scoring run over the opening four minutes of the third. Osborne contributed five points to the rally with a three-pointer and a layup, and Gray capped it off with a basket of her own at the 6:08 mark to put EMU up 43-27. EMU's third quarter cushion peaked at 18 thanks to a layup from Osborne with 3:07 left in the period. But the Owls refused to go away, closing the quarter on a 7-2 run, bringing the margin down to 11 as EMU entered the fourth up 54-43.
Fourth Quarter
The final period got off to a bit of a nervous start for the Royals as Bryn Mawr got as close as five points with a Jessica Smith three-pointer at 6:48 remaining. Coach Posey then took a timeout to give the team a chance to reset. The rejuvenated Royals closed out the game on 15-4 scoring run to pull away from the Owls. The rally commenced with seven straight points from Osborne. Burke followed that up with six unanswered points of her own.
Jayda Jones closed out the Royals' scoring with a layup at the 2:18 mark. From there, EMU emptied the bench to get role players some time on the court, and then the celebration commenced for the Royals.
