Field Hockey Celebrates Seniors Against Virginia Wesleyan

HARRISONBURG, Va. - It was senior day for EMU Field Hockey on Saturday, as the Royals celebrated a pair of four-year veterans: Morgan Leslie and Courtney Crawford

The Marlins, however, played spoiler as they scored two goals in the second and one in the third, picking up a 3-0 win over EMU.

Highlights
  • The Royals defense was locked in in the opening 15 minutes. They allowed Virginia Wesleyan just three shots on goal, all of which were stopped by Gracyn Arruda. EMU's offense, however, was also shutout, as the teams went into the second knotted at zero. 
  • The Marlins came out firing in the second quarter, and were able to get a goal in the 18th minute. After Ashlyn Boykin's shot was saved, the rebound came out to Dani Poulsen, who sent a shot toward the goal and found the stick of Isabelle Rogers, who tapped it in for the 1-0 lead. Boykin added to the VWU lead with a goal in the 25th minute, for a 2-0 lead at the half, despite 14 saves from Arruda at the break. 
  • Terranie Bennett added a pair of defensive saves in the third, holding the Marlins to just one goal. 
  • In the fourth, the Royals defense held VWU without a shot on cage. EMU's best chance came in the 56th minute, as the Royals drew a penalty corner. Sophia Armato played a pass into Leslie, who fired a shot in, but it was knocked away by the Marlins keeper to preserve the shutout.

What's Next
EMU will be back in action on Wednesday when they to Winchester to take on #14, Shenandoah University. Gametime against the Hornets is set for 6 pm.
