Women's Volleyball Sweeps Ferrum in ODAC Matchup

HARRISONBURG, Va. - EMU kicked off the weekend Friday night against Ferrum, looking for their second straight ODAC win.

While it was a back-and-forth affair, EMU put together runs in all three sets to pick up the 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-21) win over the Panthers.

Records: EMU 5-9, 2-4 ODAC | Ferrum 5-9, 1-5 ODAC

Highlights
  • After a Lizzy Kirkton kill got things started for the Royals, Ferrum took a 4-2 lead early. Kills from Sophia Denby and Mara Woolford, a Denby/Madison Stockner block and a Manuela Marin ace, gave EMU a 4-0 run and a 6-4 lead. Later in the set, with things tied at seven, EMU scored seven straight from Laney Cline, Woolford, Stockner and Kirkton, to pull ahead 14-7. The Panthers would pull within three at 18-15, but Denby and Woolford pushed the lead back to five. A kill from Cline and a Stockner ace ended the set, putting EMU ahead 1-0.
  • The teams traded points to 9-8 Ferrum to start set two, before EMU picked up an 8-1 run, highlighted by three points from Kirkton, a pair of kills from Denby and a Megan Miller ace. Once again, FC would fight back and pull within three, but the Royals continued to have answers for anything Ferrum threw at them. EMU extended their lead to six late, 24-18, before Ferrum went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to three. But a big kill from Denby ended the threat and gave set two to the Royals.
  • Two kills from Kirkton and a Miller ace was a hot start for EMU in set three as they moved ahead 4-0. Ferrum answered with an 8-2 run to take the lead, which they would hold to 10-9. A block from Cline and Stocker tied the match at 10 and the teams traded points 17-all. An FC error and a Woolford ace gave the Royals a two-point cushion but Ferrum would keep EMU in their sights, continuing to cut their deficit to one. But with the Royals leading 23-21, a Woolford kill, a Marin ace and a Stockner kill finished out the set, and the Panthers, for the EMU sweep.
