Royals Fall in Home Finale

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Royals women's soccer team wrapped up their 2023 home slate on Wednesday, taking on #24 Virginia Wesleyan in an ODAC matchup.

The Marlins used a pair of first half goals, adding three in the second half, to pick up a 5-0 win over EMU.

Highlights
  • The Royals held Virginia Wesleyan scoreless for the first 20 minutes of the game as starting keeper, Anna Filipkowski, picked up three saves to keep the game tied at zero.
  • 20' - The Marlins broke the scoreless tie after a pass from Alexis Miller found Alexandria Soteriou, who put it past the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Olivia Braunbeck added a second goal at the 31:31 mark, giving VWU a 2-0 lead at the break.
  • Just four minutes into the second half, Virginia Wesleyan added a third goal, this time from Charlotte Gantt, giving VWU a 3-0 lead. EMU's best chance came in the 65th minute when Lyndsay Harris dribbled up the far side and sent a shot toward the goal, but the Marlins keeper made a nice save to keep the shutout intact.
  • Virginia Wesleyan added two more goals in the half, despite four saves from Filipkowski.

What's Next
EMU will conclude the 2023 season on Saturday when they head to North Carolina to take on Guilford. Kickoff against the Quakers is set for 6 pm.
