Campbell's Gem, Fravel's Homerun Lead to Softball Saturday Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

LYNCHBURG, Va. - If you like good pitching, there was something for you. If you prefer lots off offense, there was something for you too.

The Royals pulled out a nailbiter over Randolph in game one, 1-0, before outslugging the WildCats in game two, 13-9. The Saturday sweep moves EMU to 17-4-1, 3-3 ODAC.

Highlights - Game One

  • It was a pitching duel in the opening matchup between EMU and Randolph. Neither team was able to put together much offense but it was the Royals who picked up a couple of key hits and took advantage of a WildCat mistake to score the games only run.
  • Grace Fravel picked up a two-out double in the top of the second and moved to third on Becca Boone's single through the left side. Fravel came in to score on a passed ball to give EMU a 1-0 lead.
  • That one run would turn out to the be the game winner and the only run that starter Emily Campbell would need. She held Randolph to just four hits, a pair in the second and one each in the sixth and seventh, isssuing just one walk and striking out a pair. The win puts her at 8-1. Korenn Paige, Fravel and Boone had a hit each for EMU.

Highlights - Game Two

  • EMU put up more offense in the first inning of game two than they needed in all of game one. Erin Keith picked up a one-out single before coming around to score on Sierra Lantz's two-run homerun, her team-leading seventh of the season. First-year Natalye Graham got the start in the circle for the Royals and struggled, giving up four runs on three hits without recording an out. Campbell came back on to pitch and kept the damage at 4-2 after one.
  • Campbell helped her cause, leading off the second with a single, followed by a base knock from Graham to put runners at first and second. Keith drove in Campbell and Kaitlyn Fletcher's single scored Graham to tie things at four. An inside-the-park homerun would give Randolph the lead back in the bottom of the second but Campbell's defense helped her out with a big double play to end the threat.
  • The Royals offense stayed hot, with Keith tying the game with an RBI in the fourth before Paige drove in a run and Keith had a two-RBI double in the fifth to put EMU on top, 8-5. Campbell continued to cruise through the middle innings, but she got in trouble in the sixth, with Randolph plating four to take a one-run lead and sending EMU to their final three outs.
  • In the seventh, Keith reached base for the fifth time with a walk, moved to second on Fletcher's sac bunt and went to third on a wild pitch. Lantz walked, putting runners on the corners with Fravel at the plate. She took a two-strike pitch and planted it over the center field fence for her second dinger of the season to give EMU the lead back, 11-9. Two more walks were followed by a single from Bri Allen that drove in a pair and gave the Royals a four run cushion. Campbell came back out in the seventh and sat the WildCats down in order to preserve the win and give her a 9-1 record on the season.
  • Keith had a huge day at the plate, finishing 4-5 with two doubles, four RBI and two runs. Emerson Adkins added three hits and a run while Fletcher, Lance and Fravel all had multiple hits. Fravel chipped in three RBI while Lantz and Allen each had two.

By the Numbers

11 - In picking up 19 hits in game two, EMU now has double-digit hits in 11 of their 22 games played this season. They have 214 hits on the season, which is fifth in the ODAC in 4-5 fewer games than the teams above them.
3 - With her homerun in game two, Lantz now has seven on the season, tying her total from last year. That total puts her tied for sixth all time for a single season and just three behind the all-time record of nine.
