Softball Splits ODAC Doubleheader with Shenandoah

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Royals softball team picked up a much-needed win in game one of Wednesday's doubleheader against Shenandoah. Unfortunately, they couldn't finish the sweep as the Hornets bested EMU in extra innings of game two. The split puts EMU at 18-11-1, 4-10 ODAC.

Highlights - Game One

  • Shenandoah got on the board first in game one, taking a 2-0 lead off EMU starter Emily Campbell after the first two innings. The Royals put runners on in each of the first two frames but couldn't push anyone across.
  • In the third, Emerson Adkins led off with a walk and Kendall Stettler beat out a bunt single to put runners on first and second. Bri Allen singled, loading the bases, before Grace Fravel tied the game with a two-RBI single to right field. Sierra Lantz walked to load the bases once again and then, with one out, Becca Boone cleared the bags with a double to left-center, giving EMU a 5-2 lead.
  • Campbell kept Shenandoah off the board in the fourth and fifth while EMU added some insurance runs in their half of the fifth. Fravel led off with a blast to right-center for her fourth homerun of the season. Lantz followed that up with a single, moved to second on a sac bunt from Erin Keith and moved to third on Boone's single. A fielder's choice from Korenn Paige plated Lantz, giving EMU a 7-2 cushion.
  • The Hornets were able to add a run in the sixth on a two-out bases loaded walk from Campbell, but Natalye Graham came in and shut the door on the rally. Graham worked around a lead off single in the seventh to finish the game and pick up her third save of the season. Campbell got the win, her 10th, going 5.2 innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out four.
  • At the plate, the Royals were led by Fravel and Boone who had two hits and three RBI each.

Highlights - Game Two

  • This time it was EMU that got on the board first, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. After Graham, who got the start in the circle, kept Shenandoah off the board through two, Lantz led off the second with a walk. She moved to third on Boone's double and came in to score on Paige's single up the middle. Then, in the third, Allen reached on an error and came all the way around to score on a double by Fravel. Fravel then crossed home plate on an RBI by Keith, putting the Royals ahead 3-0.
  • They added to their lead in the fourth when Adkins drove in Rayn Robinson, giving the Royals a 4-0 lead.
  • Shenandoah chipped away at the lead, adding two runs in the fifth and sixth to tie things at four. Boone doubled to lead off the sixth but was stranded at second and EMU couldn't plate a run in the bottom of the seventh, sending the game to extras.
  • In the extra frame, a nice play from Stettler and Boone saved a run in the eighth but SU was able to plate one in the ninth. Starting with a runner on second, Adkins picked up a two-out walk and Stettler hit a sharp ground ball, but it was right to the shortstop who tossed it to second, securing the win for SU. Fravel, who came in to pitch in the seventh, took the loss, giving up just one run, unearned, and one hit over the final three innings. Graham pitched 6.0 innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out five.
  • Offensively, EMU was led by Boone and Paige, who had two hits apiece. Fravel, Keith, Paige and Adkins had the four RBI for EMU.
