Box Score 2 HARRISONBURG, Va. - You can't win them all.
The EMU softball team, who was off to the team's best start in more than 20 years, dropped its first series of the season on Saturday, falling to Lynchburg 6-5 in eight innings before dropping game two, 8-5. The losses send EMU to 14-3-1, 0-2 ODAC.
Highlights - Game One
- Lynchburg loaded the bases in the top of the first before EMU starter Emily Campbell got a pop out to end the threat. EMU picked up four runs in their half of the opening frame, with Bri Allen leading off with a single and later coming around to score on Sierra Lantz's homerun. After Natalye Graham walked, Becca Boone doubled to right field, scoring Graham. Boone came around to score on a Grace Fravel base hit and EMU finished the inning leading 4-0.
- Campbell kept the Hornets bats off balance, giving up just one run in the third and a pair in the fifth before she was replaced by Graham with a runner on first. The very next batter homered to center, putting Lynchburg on top 5-4.
- EMU was down to its final out in the seventh, with runners on first and second. Boone came up with a big single to center field, plating Kaitlyn Fletcher and tying things at five, sending the game to extra innings.
- In the eighth, Lynchburg was able to push one across and ultimately picked up the one-run win when EMU stranded the tying run at third. Graham picked up the loss for EMU, her first of the season, giving up just one earned run over the final 3.1 innings.
- Offensively, Boone and Fravel had a pair of hits each while Boone also drove in two. Lantz also had a pair of RBI.
Highlights - Game Two
- The Royals once again jumped out to a first inning lead, putting up a pair of runs. Erin Keith reached on an error and moved to third on a Fletcher single. Fletcher moved to second on a groundout and Boone doubled to deep center field, driving in the pair.
- In the third, a Lantz fielder's choice drove in Keith and put EMU ahead 3-0. But in their half of the fourth, Lynchburg finally got to Fravel, who got the start in the circle for the Royals. After a pair of singles and a throwing error loaded the bases, a grand slam quickly cleared them and put UL ahead 4-3. EMU tied things in the bottom of the fourth when Emerson Adkins singled in Graham.
- Lynchburg plated a pair of runs in the sixth and seventh innings to go up by four. In the Royals half of the seventh, Adkins picked up a one-out double and later scored on a Keith single. But Lynchburg would pick up the final out and pick up the doubleheader win. Fravel picked up the loss for EMU, giving up six earned runs over 6.1 innings. Fletcher finished the final 0.2.
- At the plate, Keith, Boone and Adkins all had a pair of hits and Boone also had two RBI and is on a six-game hit streak for EMU. Keith scored a pair of runs in the Royals loss.
