Softball Sweeps SVU in Saturday Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

BUENA VISTA, Va. - It wasn't always pretty, but a win is a win...and two are even better.

Erin Keith drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth in Saturday's first game as EMU took the opener 4-3. In game two, the Royals bats exploded for eight run in the top of the seventh as they took down the Knights 8-3. The wins move EMU to 11-1, 0-0 ODAC.

Highlights - Game One

  • EMU got on the board right off the bat in game one. After Bri Allen doubled, she came around to score on a Kaitlyn Fletcher single to put the Royals ahead 1-0. They added to that lead in the second, plating a pair to go up 3-0. Korenn Paige led off the inning with a single and advanced to second when Keith reached on an error. Emily Campbell moved them over with a groundout and Kendall Stettler drove in Paige with a single. Keith came around to score on an errant throw by the catcher before the Knights got out of the jam.
  • Fletcher, who got the start in the circle, kept SVU off the board until the third. A leadoff walk, followed by a double, put runners on second and third. Another double scored the pair and a single put a runner on third, ending Fletcher's day and bringing Campbell into pitch. After a flyout, the next batter singled, plating the runner on third and tying the game. Campbell then got the final out to end the frame.
  • Neither team was able to score in the fourth or fifth, but in the sixth, Natalye Graham reached on an error and Becca Boone singled, moving her to second Rayn Robinson pinch ran for Graham and ended up coming around to score on Keith's single. Campbell worked around a single in the sixth and sat the Knights down in order in the seventh to pick up her fourth win of the season.
  • Seven different players had a hit for the Royals with Stettler, Fletcher and Keith all driving runs.

Highlights - Game Two

  • Southern Virginia got the scoring started in the first in game two, picking up a run off Graham, who got the start for EMU. EMU's offense was kept off balance by the Knights pitcher as they managed just a singles from Paige, Stettler and Graham in the second, third, fourth and sixth, respectively. The Knights added an insurance run in the sixth off Graham, to take a 2-0 lead. Campbell replaced Graham in the circle and got EMU back into the dugout.
  • The Royals bats came to life in the top of the seventh. With one out, Campbell helped her cause, homering and cutting the Knights lead in half. Stettler followed that up with a single and came around to score, tying the game, on Allen's double. Allen then scored on a base hit from Fletcher, who later came around to score on a wild pitch. Paige drove in a run, Keith picked up an RBI and Autumn Bailey capped off the scoring with a homerun, plating Keith and giving EMU eight runs on seven hits in the frame. SVU was able to tack on another run in the bottom of the seventh but Campbell used a pair of flyouts and groundout to end the game and move to 5-1 on the season.
  • Stettler, Fletcher and Graham all had two hits for the Royals while Bailey led the way with a pair of RBI.
