Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The softball team's spring break trip might be ending, but they made sure their win streak didn't.
The Royals stayed perfect on the year, picking up wins over Thiel, 5-2, and Gwynedd Mercy, 9-5, to wrap up their time at the beach. EMU now sits at 8-0, 0-0 ODAC.
Highlights vs Thiel
- Kaitlyn Fletcher got the start in the circle against the Tomcats, keeping them off the board for the first three innings. The Royals got on the board in the third, taking a 2-0 lead. Erin Keith singled before scoring on a Bri Allen double. Kendall Stettler followed that up with an RBI single of her own, plating Allen.
- Thiel was able to tie things in the top of the fourth, taking advantage of a single, an error and a walk to load the bases. Back-to-back singles plated two runs but Fletcher got a big strikeout to leave the bags full. EMU would quickly retake the lead in their half of the fourth. Sierra Lantz singled to leadoff the inning and then Grace Fravel teed off on the first pitch she saw and put it over the left field fence, giving EMU a 4-2 advantage. Natalye Graham would reach with a hit and move to third on a Tomcat error. Becca Boone's sac fly scored Graham, putting the Royals ahead 5-2.
- Graham took over in the circle in the fifth inning. She finished out the game, giving up just two hits and striking out one.
- Six different Royals had a hit in the win with Fravel leading the way with two RBI and a run. Allen, Stettler and Boone all had RBI. Fletcher picked up the win, moving to 2-0 on the season while Graham earned her first save.
Highlights vs Gwynedd Mercy
- Fravel was the Royals starting pitcher for game two, working around a one out single in the first to keep the Griffins off the board. EMU used some small ball to pick up their first runs of the game in the second. After Lantz and Fravel both walked, Emily Campbell sac bunted them up a base each, which was followed by a two-RBI double by Autumn Bailey. The Royals added a run in the third with Stettler scoring on a Fravel single, to put EMU ahead 3-0.
- GMU would put up a four-spot in the bottom of the third, using a sac fly and a pair of singles to take a 4-3 lead. Fravel would leave the game after the third and Campbell would keep Gwynedd Mercy off the board through the fourth and fifth, which gave EMU a chance to rally in the sixth.
- Lantz started the sixth reaching on an error and moved up when Fravel singled. A wild pitch moved each up 60 feet and they both scored on a Campbell double. Campbell advanced to third on an Keith hit and scored on a Boone sac fly. EMU would tack on three more in the seventh when Lantz drove the first pitch of the at-bat over the center field wall for a homerun. An error allowed the Griffins to pick up a run in the bottom of the seventh but Campbell got the final batter to ground out to short to end the game.
- Fravel and Bailey had two hits apiece and Lantz drove in three runs, with Fravel and Bailey driving in two each, to pace the Royals offense. Campbell gave up just one run and one hit over the final four innings to pick up her third win of the season.
By the Numbers
9 - The EMU offense has nine players hitting over .300 with at least 13 at-bats on the season. Fravel (.545) and Fletcher (.519) sit 1-2 in the ODAC in batting average.
12 - A dozen different Royals have at least one RBI for the season, with Fravel leading the way with 10 and Boone, Campbell and Fletcher with eight each.
6 & 7 - EMU has scored 82 runs through their first eight games, which is third in the ODAC. The top two teams, Roanoke and Lynchburg, have played 13 and 14 games, respectively.
What's Next
EMU will return to Gehman field next Friday for a doubleheader against Mary Washington. Game one will start at 3 pm with game two following shortly after the conclusion.
