Box Score 2 HIRAM, Ohio - After a two week hiatus, the EMU men's volleyball team was back in match action Saturday with a doubleheader in Ohio.
The Royals dropped the first match to Baldwin Wallace 0-3 (22-25, 20-25, 12-25) before falling to host Hiram in match two, 0-3 (13-25, 17-25, 24-26). The losses send EMU to 0-4, 0-0 CVC.
Highlights vs Baldwin Wallace
- Jacob Durren got things started for EMU, securing his first kill of the match to give the Royals a 1-0 lead. Trailing 3-7, a kill from Ben Childers and an ace from Christopher Webster brought EMU within two, 5-7. Later in the set, a Childers block followed by back-to-back kills from Durren, followed by a pair of BW errors, tied things at 15. The teams traded points but ultimately the Yellow Jackets picked up the final two points to take set one.
- In set two, Durren had a big set, coming away with three blocks and a kill while Nate McGhee had two kills and a block himself but BW was able to take the set 25-17.
- In the final frame, the Yellow Jackets went on a 6-0 run before a service error put BW ahead 7-2. Later one, back-to-back kills from McGhee pulled EMU within six but a 7-1 run put the match out of reach. Two more kills from McGhee and one from Childers tried to pull the Royals back in the match but the Yellow Jackets picked up a kill to end things and take the match 3-0.
- McGhee finished with a team-high seven kills, Durren added six and Webster finished with five. Tyler Oaks dished out 15 assists. Defensively, Durren led the way with two solo blocks and one block assists while AJ Bagby had two solo blocks.
Highlights vs Hiram
- There was no time for the Royals to think about match one as they turned right around to square off with Hiram. The Royals kept it close to start the first set, using kills from Durren and McGhee and blocks from Webster and Durren to make the score 6-7. Four straight from the Terriers extended the lead but EMU was still able to keep Hiram in view. Trailing 11-18, EMU took advantage of a pair of Terrier errors to pull within five, but the hosts ended the set on a 7-0 run to take set one.
- The Terriers picked back up in the second set and pulled ahead 21-10. But EMU fought back with two McGhee kills, a Childers ace, a Drew Bennett kill, cutting the lead to 24-16. But a Terrier kill gave Hiram a 2-0 lead.
- The Royals led for the majority of set three. Kills from Bennett, Durren and a McGhee block gave EMU a 4-1 advantage and forced a Terrier timeout. Hiram tied things out of the break and the teams traded points until the Royals used a 3-0 run to take a 16-13 lead. They continued to hold onto the advantage, leading 23-21, before Hiram tied things at 23 apiece, forcing an EMU timeout. A Durren kill gave EMU set point, 24-23, but the Terriers took three straight to take the final set, 26-24.
- McGhee once again led the way for the Royals, picking up a match-high 11 kills to go with three digs. Durren added five kills. Bollinger was the assist man in match two, finishing with 20.
What's Next
EMU will wrap up their Ohio roadtrip with a Sunday morning matchup at Mount St. Joseph. First serve is scheduled for 11 am.
