Royals Drop Final Road Game of the Season

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. - EMU wrapped up its 2022 road slate on Tuesday, heading south to take on the streaking Generals of W&L.

The Generals shot 50% from the field en route to an 81-67 win over EMU. The W&L win split the season series between the teams, with each team winning at home. The loss sends EMU to 9-13, 7-8 ODAC.

Highlights

  • Tim Jones got things started for the Royals, drilling a jumper to put EMU ahead 2-0. W&L would take the lead on seven straight before Landon Swingler had a driving layup that stopped the Generals scoring run. W&L would hit a three but Jones answered with one of his own, keeping the W&L lead at three. Washington and Lee would then go on a 14-7 run, pulling ahead 24-14, relying heavily on their three-point shooting.
  • DaiJordan Brown and Mark Burkholder added four straight for EMU, cutting the Generals advantage to six. W&L would respond with a 5-0 run to push their lead to 11 before Jones sandwiched an and-one with four of his own, to make the score 32-22, Washington and Lee. Mizz Nyagwegwe hit a jumper with just over a minute in the half to pull EMU within single-digits but a step back jumper from W&L under 10 seconds sent the two teams to the locker room with the Generals ahead 40-29.
  • EMU came out running, starting the second half on an 15-7 run with points from Burkholder, Swingler, Jones, Nyagwegwe and Aviwe Mahlong to cut W&L's lead to three, 47-44. After a General layup, Jones nailed a three to pull within two. That's when things took a turn for EMU as Washington and Lee then went on a run of their own, outscoring the Royals 23-8 over the next eight minutes and going up 72-55, their largest lead of the game.
  • EMU went on a 7-2 tilt, picking up buckets from Swingler, Jones and a big three from Nyagwegwe to cut the lead to 12 but it was too late to answer the Generals run over the previous eight minute span. Marcos Pradales picked up five straight to end the game for EMU.
  • Offensively, the Royals were led by Jones' 23 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists. Nyagwegwe was the only other Royal in double-figure, adding 11.
