Men's Volleyball Drops Pair to Close Out Arcadia Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GLENSIDE, Pa. - The Royals finished their time in Pennsylvania on Sunday, falling in a pair of matches to round out their time at the Arcadia Invitatonal. EMU dropped a 3-0 (20-25, 12-25, 16-25) to the host Knights before falling 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 20-25) to Misericordia. EMU now sits at 2-8, 1-0 CVC.

Highlights vs Arcadia

  • Arcadia jumped out to a 9-5 lead before an error and a Wyatt Bollinger ace pulled EMU within two. The Knights then went on a 7-2 run, pulling ahead 16-9 before a pair of AU errors cut the lead to 17-11. Three straight Knight points extended the lead but EMU responded with three-straight of their own to make the score 14-20. Arcadia won four of the next five points, to go up 24-15, but a 4-0 tilt from the Royals, highlighted by a Drew Bennett kill, a Tyler Oaks and Jacob Durren block as well as a Nate McGhee kill cut the lead to five. Arcadia, however, closed out the set with a kill on the next point to go up 1-0.
  • A 6-0 run to start the second set put Arcadia on top early. But four straight from EMU, with points from McGhee, Durren Christopher Webster pulled the Royals back into the set. The teams traded points until, with Arcadia up 13-9, the Knights went on a 7-2 run to pull ahead 20-11. EMU would get one more point but AU would close out the set to take a 2-0 lead.
  • The final set stayed tight through the first 20 point, with Arcadia holding a narrow 11-9 lead. But a 5-0 run would push the lead to seven. The Royals would add seven more in the set, picking up points from McGhee, and Ben Childers but the Knights would close out the match with a kill.
  • Offensively, the Royals were led by McGhee who finished with nine kills. Childers added a pair of kills and four total blocks.

Highlights vs Misericordia

  • Misericordia used a strong start to pull out to a 13-7 lead on EMU. But the Royals responded with three straight, including a Bollinger ace, to cut the lead to three. The Cougars would continue to hold a multiple-point lead until late when three straight errors cut their lead to just one, 18-17. The teams would trade points with MU taking a 22-18 lead but the Royals would respond two of their own, including a McGhee kill, to cut the deficit to two. The Cougars would finish things, picking up three of the final four points to take a 1-0 lead.
  • A 4-0 run gave Misericordia a 7-3 lead to start the second set and they would hold a 10-5 lead before the Royals went on a 6-1 run with a Bollinger kill, a Durren block and a Tyler Oaks ace to tie things at 11 and force an MU timeout. The Cougars responded out of the TO with four straight and the teams would trade points, with EMU pulling within two at 19-17. Misericordia picked up three in a row to go ahead five and would close out the set, 25-20.
  • Once again, the Cougars started fast and jumped ahead 14-8 in the third. But like they did all day, the Royals responded with a 5-0 run, using McGhee kills, a Bollinger ace and multiple Cougar errors to cut the deficit to one, 13-14. Misericordia would pick up a point but EMU would tie things at 15. The Cougars picked up back-to-back points three more times, taking a 22-18 lead. A McGhee kill and a Cougar error put EMU behind just 20-22 but MU finished the set, and the match, scoring the final three points.
  • EMU was led once again by McGhee with 10 kills, his fourth double-figure kill match in the last five matches. Oaks dished out 12 assists in the loss.
