Royals Fall in ODAC Opener at Roanoke

Box Score

SALEM, Va. – After being rained out twice, the EMU field hockey team was finally able to open ODAC play Monday night, heading to Salem to take on Roanoke.

It was a great defensive matchup but it was a fourth quarter goal by Roanoke that proved to be the difference as the Maroons picked up the slim 2-1 win over EMU.

Records: EMU 5-3, 0-1 ODAC | Roanoke 7-2, 1-0 ODAC

Highlights

  • 3' – EMU picked up a shot in the early minutes of the first quarter as Brandy Troutman was able to get inside the circle, but her shot was blocked before getting to the cage.
  • 7' – Four minutes later, Troutman was able to put one on goal but Maroons keeper Madison Wingerter, was able to come up with the save.
  • Ann Ghally got her first start of the season in the cage for EMU and she was tested throughout the first half. 12 saves from Ghally, along with a defensive save from Hayley Collins, kept Roanoke off the board and kept the game scoreless at the half.
  • 32' – Roanoke struck first in the second half, taking a 1-0 two minutes into the third quarter. Lindsey Keyes sent a pass to Grace Vernarelli who put it in the back of the cage.
  • 41' – That lead was short lived, however, as the Royals answered back 9 minutes later. Off a Royals penalty corner and after an Elizabeth Longacre shot was saved, Kate Landis beat the Roanoke keeper to tie things at one, ending the Maroons six-game shutout streak.
  • 46' – Roanoke scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal just 33 seconds into the fourth quarter on a goal by Josephine van Leyen.
  • 50' – Troutman had another shot on goal but the Roanoke keeper made a nice save to maintain the Maroons lead. Troutman was able to pick up another shot on goal in the 54th minute but that one was also saved by Wingerter.

Statistical Leaders

  • Landis – 1 goal
  • A. Ghally – 13 saves
  • Troutman – 3 shots on goal
