Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. – The EMU field hockey team came into Wednesday's game looking to do something it hasn't done in more than a decade: get to 10 wins on the season.
Mission accomplished.
Brandy Troutman recorded seven points while the EMU defense allowed just one goal en route to a 4-1 Royals win over Virginia Wesleyan.
Records: EMU 10-6, 3-4 ODAC | Virginia Wesleyan 2-13, 0-7 ODAC
Highlights
- 8' – Neither team was able to gain much offensive momentum in the first quarter. The Marlins picked up a shot on goal, but their attempt was saved by Ann Ghally.
- 16' – The Royals wasted little time putting points on the board in the second quarter. Troutman dribbled around a pair of Marlin defenders, moved to her left and fired a backhand shot that beat the VWU keeper high and to her left for the goal, putting EMU ahead 1-0. That lead would stand to halftime with Ghally picking up a save and the Marlins keeper adding four saves.
- Just like the first quarter, neither team was able to put anything in the back of the cage in the third quarter. Once again, the Virginia Wesleyan keeper came up with two saves to keep their deficit to just one heading to the final frame.
- 51' – The Marlins were able to score the equalizer six minutes into the fourth quarter off a goal from Stephanie Hoke off a deflection from a previous shot.
- 52' – Less than minute after Virginia Wesleyan tied things up, the Royals took the lead back, for good. Elizabeth Longacre played a penalty corner pass into Troutman, who fired her shot from the top of the circle past the Marlins keeper, putting EMU ahead 2-0.
- 54' – The Royals, and Troutman, weren't done as she added her third goal of the night just two minutes later. This time she dribbled around multiple Marlin defenders and fired a slapshot to the bottom left corner of the cage to complete her hat trick.
- 56' – The final goal of the night came off the stick of Morgan Leslie. Leslie took a pass from Troutman and put it past the diving VWU keeper for the Royals 4-1 lead.
