Royals Fall to Late Lynchburg Rally

Box Score

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Having one of their best shooting performance of the season, it looked like the Royals were on their way to snapping a three-game skid.

But Lynchburg had different ideas as the Hornets used a 15-5 run over the final 4:16 to pick up a 76-70 win over EMU. The loss takes EMU to 5-10, 3-5 ODAC while Lynchburg improves to 9-5, 3-2 ODAC.

Highlights

  • Lynchburg jumped out to a 2-0 lead before a Mizz Nyagwegwe layup put EMU on the board. Tim Jones answered a Hornet basket with a three of his own to put the Royals ahead and the two teams would trade points, and the lead, until the 12:43 mark when Chris Simmons hit a jumper to give EMU a 15-14 lead. Mark Burkholder and Julien Hagerman threes sandwiched a Lynchburg layup and DaiJordan Brown added a three of his own to put EMU up eight, 24-16.
  • Late in the half, Lynchburg would pull within three but another EMU three, this time from Aviwe Mahlong, put the Royals back up by six. Lynchburg was able to pull within three again late in the half, but free throws from Simmons, along with a Landon Swingler basket, send EMU to the half leading 40-34.
  • The Royals were able to build to a 10-point lead to start the second half on a Mahlong jumper but were then held scoreless for the next three minutes as Lynchburg added eight straight to pull back within three. Jones answered with another basket, pushing the lead back to five at 13:29.
  • EMU seemed to have an answer anytime the Hornets made a push, keeping Lynchburg at bay. After Mahlong hit another shot and gave EMU a 65-61 lead at the 4:16 mark, Lynchburg went on a run, holding EMU to just five points down the stretch.
  • Mahlong paced the Royals offensively, finishing with 14, his third straight game scoring in double digits and his fourth in the last five games. Simmons fell one rebound shy of a double-double, picking up 13 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting from the field to go along with nine boards. Jones also chipped in 13 points while Burkholder finished with 11.
