Royals Put Scare Into No. 22 Randolph-Macon

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Behind two complete games from pitcher junior Emily Campbell (Broadway, Va./Broadway), the EMU softball women were within striking distance of nationally ranked Randolph-Macon Tuesday afternoon in Ashland, Va. Despite the great play, the Royals came up just short in both ends of the ODAC twinbill.

Eastern Mennonite returns home on Wednesday, hosting Southern Virginia in a non-conference affair. First pitch on Gehman Field is 3:00pm.

Randolph-Macon 2, EMU 1
The Yellow Jackets bunched their offense into the second inning of the opener, getting three of their four hits. One run scored on a squeeze play and another on a double before Campbell coaxed out two fly balls to strand two runners in scoring position.

EMU rallied in the sixth, started by a two-out walk from Elizabeth Horn (Dover, Del./Polytech). Korenn Paige (Winchester, Va./Sherando) followed with a single and Horn came all the way around to score when the left fielder misplayed the ball, cutting the deficit in half. But a foul out ended the threat and a 1-2-3 seventh left the Royals short.

Campbell had a solid outing, allowing just four hits in 6.0 innings.

Paige and Erin Keith (Stuart, Va./Patrick County) had EMU's hits, both singles. Horn earned the only walk of the game and scored.

Randolph-Macon 3, EMU 0
Campbell returned to the circle for the nightcap, starting both ends of a doubleheader for the first time this season. She wasn't as dominant in the second game, but her defense turned double plays in the first and third to cut down rallies.

The Royals got runners on second and third with two outs in the second, but a pop-up ended the threat.

Randolph-Macon finally broke through in the fourth, plating one run on a pair of doubles. The women again had two runners on base in the fifth, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the frame. The Yellow Jackets doubled in a run in their half of the fifth, and then tacked on an unearned run in the sixth.

An error and walk allowed the Royals to get two on base in the seventh, but another pop-up left them shutout.

Keith and Autumn Bailey (Harrisonburg, Va./East Rockingham) each had a single and walk in the game. Horn also had a base hit.

Campbell again went the distance, allowing two earned runs in the 6.0 innings.
