Box Score 2 The EMU softball team came up short in a road ODAC doubleheader on Saturday, dropping a pair of decisions to traditional power Roanoke College.
The Royals are back on the road on Tuesday for another tough matchup at Randolph-Macon. The doubleheader in Ashland, Va., starts at 3:00pm.
Roanoke 15, EMU 2
The Royals left a runner stranded at third base in the top of the first, and then the game quickly spiraled out of control in the bottom of the frame when a pair of errors allowed Roanoke to plate seven runs. By the time EMU would get another hit they trailed 14-0.
Korenn Paige (Winchester, Va./Sherando) led off the fourth with a single and after a pair of outs, Emily Campbell (Broadway, Va./Broadway) rocketed a double to left center to put both women in scoring position. Erin Keith (Start, Va./Patrick County) came through with the clutch two-out single, bringing in both runs. But that would be it for the Royals as they managed just a one more hit in the fifth.
The defense struggled, committing four errors, and Katelin Martin (Goochland, Va./Goochland) and Paige couldn't keep things in check from the circle. Eight of Roanoke's errors came home as unearned.
Paige, Campbell, Keith and Bri Allen (Weyers Cave, Va./Fort Defiance) had EMU's hits.
Roanoke 12, EMU 0
Eastern Mennonite stranded three runners in scoring position through the first two frames of the second game, while the Maroons took advantage of their opportunities by plating five runs during that span. Four were unearned.
The Royals earned just two more base runners over the final three innings.
The women had four hits in this game as well, with Paige, Campbell, Emily Davis (King George, Va./Fredericksburg Christian) and Autumn Bailey (Harrisonburg, Va./East Rockingham) each getting on.
Campbell pitched a complete game from the circle in the loss.
