Upset Bids Derailed By Errors

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The EMU softball women continue to prove they are just a play or two away from some impressive wins. Friday that was evident at Lynchburg, where the Royals kept their bats on pace with the ODAC's leading team, but costly errors left them just short.

After two losses, Eastern Mennonite sits at 2-16 overall and 0-12 in the ODAC as they prepare Saturday's twinbill at Ferrum College. Lynchburg stands atop the ODAC with an 11-1 record.

Lynchburg 7, EMU 2
The Royals earned just as many hits as Lynchburg in the opener but were stung by five errors in the field.

The Hornets took the lead with a pair of runs in the first, before the women got an RBI double from Sierra Lantz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) in the third and another from Elizabeth Horn (Dover, Del./Polytech) in the fourth to tie it up.

But just as soon the EMU had tied it, things came unraveled. A one-out error in the bottom of the fourth stretched out the frame, and Lynchburg took advantage with two outs, getting back-to-back-to-back hits to plate four unearned runs. The Hornets added another unearned run in the sixth to make the deficit insurmountable.

Korenn Paige (Winchester, Va./Sherando) batted 3-for-3 with a run scored, while Lantz finished with a pair of hits.

Emily Campbell (Broadway, Va./Broadway) went the distance in the circle, but took the tough luck loss despite allowing only one earned run.

Lynchburg 5, EMU 4
The home team again got on the board first in the nightcap, getting a solo homer and an unearned run in the bottom of the second.

Lantz continued her hot hitting by launching a solo shot to center in the fourth, cutting the margin to 2-1. But Lynchburg plated two more in the fifth.

Sophomore Autumn Bailey (Harrisonburg, Va./East Rockingham) pulled a two-run homer to left in the sixth, getting the Royals back within one, but Lynchburg struck a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame to get the lead back to 5-3.

EMU tried their own two-out rally in the seventh, with Lantz's double to the opposite field scoring a run. A grounder to shortstop left the tying runner in scoring position, however, as the comeback fell just short.

Lantz was 3-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBIs. Bailey's homer was the first of her collegiate career. Katelin Martin (Goochland, Va./Goochland) earned two trips to the base paths with walks while also taking the pitching loss.
