Guilford Hits Past EMU Softball Team

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The EMU softball women dropped both ends of an ODAC doubleheader to Guilford Saturday afternoon in Harrisonburg.

The Royals slide to 2-12 overall as they work on a quick turnaround to host nationally ranked Emory & Henry on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30pm.

Guilford 11, EMU 2
The Quakers started early in the opener on the strength of a two-run homer in the top of the first. EMU, meanwhile, couldn't bunch their hits and left a runner in scoring position in three of the first five innings.

Trailing 5-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Royals made a move. Sierra Lantz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) started with a hard-hit infield single and then headed to third on Autumn Bailey's (Harrisonburg, Va./East Rockingham) two-out double. Becca Boone (Winchester, Va./James Wood) got the big clutch hit, shooting a single up the middle to chase home both runners to the cut the margin to 5-2.

But Guilford sent 11 batters to the plate in the top of the seventh, plating six runs to put the game out of reach.

Bri Allen (Weyers Cave, Va./Fort Defiance) rapped out three hits, all singles. Boone had two hits and the two RBIs. Bailey had one hit and one walk.

Emily Campbell (Broadway, Va./Broadway) pitched into the top of the seventh and was charged with seven of the runs and the loss. Katelin Martin (Goochland, Va./Goochland) finished the seventh inning in the circle.

Guilford 8, EMU 0
After a quiet first inning of the second game, the Quakers plated two runs in the second to get the edge.

EMU missed out on their best scoring opportunity in the fourth before Guilford broke through in the fifth to open a 7-0 lead. The Royals didn't get another runner into scoring position until two outs in the seventh, and suffered their fourth shutout loss of the year.

Lantz was the only Royals with multiple hits, getting a pair of singles in three at-bats.

Martin threw all seven innings from the circle.
