Box Score The Eastern Mennonite soccer men played their final home match on Sunday, falling to Guilford College by a score of 3-0. The loss drops the Royals to 0-6-1 and earnes the Quakers their first win of the season, improving their record to 1-2-1.
Guilford maintained possesion a majority of the first period, keeping consistent offensive pressure on the Royals. In the 14th minute of the game, the Quakers put their first goal into the net off of the foot of Logan Eure.
Joshua Chiquillo (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) took a shot at the goal in the 22nd minute, but it was ultimately saved by the Quakers' goalie, Zach Van Campen. Chiquillo would look to equalize the contest again soon after, but missed wide.
Guilford pushed their lead to two with an unassisted goal from Kenny Nzekwe. The Royals were unable to get anything going offensively the rest of the period, sending the game into halftime down by two.
The Royals played evenly with the Quakers in the second, with both teams notching eight shots. The Quakers were able to get one more in the back of the net from Nzekwe, his second of the day in the 88th minute.
Eastern Mennonite continued to try to break through the Quakers' defense, but were unable to notch a goal in the contest, ending the match with a score of 3-0 in favor of Guilford.
Chiquillo ended the day with seven total shots, three of them being on goal. Ahmed Zaatar (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) grabbed a total of 11 saves.
The contest was the final home match for four seniors: Jamie Corzo (Bristow, Va./Patriot), Leiyan Kariuki (Nairobi, Kenya/St. Patricks), Joshua Chiquillo (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field), and Zack Newton (Manassas, Va./Osbourne Park).
Corzo transferred into the program last season and has played in 17 total games, including starting all six games thus far this year. Kariuki came into the contest today with 22 career starts with eight total career goals. Chiquillo finishes his strong career with six goals and nine assists. Finally, Newton worked his way into the starting lineup as a defender last season and has started all six games on the year.
The Royals are back on the pitch again on Thursday, Mar. 25, traveling to Washington and Lee.
