Royals Fall In Roanoke, 2-0

Box Score

Fresh off their key win on Wednesday, the Eastern Mennonite field hockey team traveled to Roanoke to play against the Maroons of Roanoke College on Friday. Despite an impressive defensive effort, the Royals fell by a score of 0-2 in the contest, falling to 1-2 on the season. With the win, the Maroons improved to 3-1 on the season.

The game was tightly contested, with both teams playing sound defense to keep the other from scoring through the first half of play.

The Maroons were able to get off two shots in the first 10 minutes of play in the game, but both were unable to find the back of the cage. Roanoke would take three more shots in the period, but were unable to get through, pushing the game into the second period with the score notched at 0-0.

The second period was much of the same, but Brandy Troutman (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) found a clearing and took a shot in the 23rd minute, but it was ultimately blocked by the Maroons. Troutman would again shoot in the same minute, but Roanoke's Hannah Roerden would save it.

The Maroon's Emilee Wooten would take a shot in the final seconds of the half, but the shot would be blocked by Eastern Mennonite, ultimately sending the contest into the half with the scored still tied at 0-0.

Roanoke would kick off the second half with a bang, notching a goal in the first minute of play off the stick of Lindsey Keyes with the assist from Julia Brown. The Maroons would keep the offensive pressure up throughout the third period, but were unable to get a second goal in the cage. The Royals were kept at bay in the third, unable to get a shot off.

Eastern Mennonite looked to equalize the contest in the fourth quarter, getting three shots off quick, but were unable to get anything past the Roanoke defenders.

The Maroons struck again in the 55th minute of the game, scoring off the stick of Madison Filson with an assist from Caroline Diehl.

From there, the Royals would not be able to get anything going offensively, ending the game at a final score of 2-0 when time expired.

Skylar Hedgepeth (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) had two shots in the contest, with one of them being on goal. Rachel Breslin (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) also added one shot on goal.

Goalie Ann Ghally (Aldie, Va./John Champe) notched 13 saves on the day with Troutman adding one defensive save in the contest.

The Royals are away again in their next contest, traveling to Shenandoah on Tuesday, Mar. 23, start time slated for 7:00pm.
