Royals Tie Hornets In Sunday Match

Box Score

Offensive action was on display at EMU on Sunday afternoon, where the men's soccer team took on the Shenandoah Hornets in a conference matchup. Both teams put forth considerable offensive pressure, but were unable to get anything into the back of the net, resulting in a tie between the two.

The Royals began the match with an onslaught of pressure, getting off three shots in the first 10 minutes of action.

From there, the Hornets would counter. The rest of the period, Shenandoah maintained the pressure on the Royals. In the final minute of play in the first period, the Hornets would get off two shots, with the final one being saved by Ahmed Zaatar (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) to keep the score where it was.

The Hornets would end up out shooting the Royals 13-8 in the period, slightly taking the offensive advantage.

EMU came into the second period on a mission to get their first win of the season. The Royals kept offensive pressure on the Hornets throughout, getting consistent looks at the goal, but were unable to get anything past the goalkeeper.

With minutes left to play, Joshua Chiquillo (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) took the last shot in regulation, barely missing the goal.

Time expired, and with the score locked up at 0-0, the two teams prepared for overtime.

Much like regulation, overtime wrote the same story, with both teams having difficulty getting anything in the net. The Royals outshot the Hornets 8-3 in overtime, but were unable to score, finishing the match with the final mark, 0-0.

Mesa Dula (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) was a consistent threat in the contest, getting off nine shots. Ethan McGee (Williamsburg, Va./Jamestown) followed behind with five shots and Leiyan Kariuki (Nairobi, Kenya/St. Patricks) added three.

Bobby Davis and Chris Chaplin each had four shots on the day for the Hornets.

With the tie, EMU finds themselves at 0-4-1 on the season, 0-3-1 in the ODAC.

The Royals spring back to action at Randolph-Macon on Thursday, Mar. 18 with a start time of 7:00pm.
