Box Score HARRISONBURG, Va. - As EMU wraps up its 2021 field hockey season, they still had one nationally-ranked opponent left on their schedule: Washington and Lee. The Generals came into Wednesday's matchup undefeated and ranked 12th in the NCAA.
W&L used five first half goals and four in the second half to pick up a 9-0 win over the Royals.
Highlights
- W&L came out swinging in the first quarter but four saves by EMU keeper Ann Ghally kept the Generals off the board and kept the match tied. But Washington and Lee broke through the Royals defense in the 7th minute when Peyton Tysinger took a pass from Tess Muneses and put it past Ghally, giving W&L a 1-0 lead. They added two more in the quarter to take a 3-0 lead after one.
- Ghally picked up four more saves to start the second before W&L was able to pad their lead in the 24th and 30th minute. Ghally stopped another Generals attack at the end of the half, so W&L went to the break up 5-0.
- Marie Wilson replaced Ghally between the pipes to start the third. The Generals added three more goals in the frame. EMU had their first opportunities of the match late in the third, but shots by Brandy Troutman and Skylar Hedgepeth were blocked to keep the Royals off the board.
- EMU came out with sticks blazing in the fourth quarter, looking to get on the board. Hedgepeth had back-to-back shots, one of which found its way on goal but was saved. That led to a Royals penalty corner which resulted in another Troutman shot that was saved as well. Troutman and Hedgepeth added two more shots but nothing came of them. W&L added their final tally of the match in the 57th minute.
- Ghally finished with 11 saves while Wilson had one. Hedgepeth had four shots and Troutman added three.
