Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – It was a comeback that fell just short.
Trailing 3-0, the EMU field hockey team used three second half goals to tie things late the match. But the home team Marlins scored in the 55th minute to hang on and beat the Royals, 4-3.
Highlights
- Virginia Wesleyan got on the board in the first quarter, scoring in the seventh minute against EMU keeper Marie Wilson. They added to their lead with two more first quarter goals to lead 3-0 at the end of one.
- The Royals kept the Marlins off the board in the second as the defense limited VWU to just three shots and Wilson saved them all.
- EMU started their comeback in the seventh minute of the third quarter when Cassidy Armstrong found Elizabeth Longacre for her 10th goal of the season. Then, with less than a minute left in the quarter, Brandy Troutman brought the Royals within one with a goal, making the score 2-3.
- Longacre's second goal of the match, with the assist from Skylar Hedgepeth, tied the match late in the fourth quarter but Virginia Wesleyan answered with a goal 30 seconds later, which turned out to be the game-winner.
- Longacre's two gives her 11 on the season and Hedgepeth's assist is her 14th. Wilson finished with 13 saves in her first start of 2021.
