Goucher Scores Late To Topple Royals, 2-1

Box Score

The Eastern Mennonite University field hockey women had a shot advantage in every quarter of Tuesday's game against Goucher, but it was the visiting Gophers who dug out the 2-1 decision.

EMU put the pressure on early, firing a pair of shots before earning a corner in the sixth minute. Lauren Hartzler (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) took a rip from the left side, with the GC goalie making a save. Freshman Juliana Ghally (Aldie, Va./John Champe) collected the rebound and poked it back at the cage, getting the goal for a 1-0 lead.

In the 14th minute, the Gophers got an equalizer from Ari Hooper, scoring after a blocked shot.

The 1-1 lock stayed until the fourth quarter. Playing down a woman, Goucher got the go-ahead goal from Meghan Oakes on a shot through traffic from the right wing in the 51st minute.

The Royals kept pushing, attempting five shots over the last eight minutes, but GC's defense clogged things up, including four blocked shots. Skylar Hedgepeth (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) had the final chance, but it was saved by the goalie.

Eastern Mennonite finished with a 19-12 advantage in shots. Goalie Ann Ghally (Aldie, Va./John Champe) made a pair of saves.

The Royals slip to 3-5 with the loss, including four by a single goal. They get the weekend off before hosting Sweet Briar College next Tuesday at 7:00pm.
