Box Score The EMU soccer men won on the road at Lebanon Valley by a score of 5-3 on Saturday. They improve to 4-5 on the season after scoring their most goals in a game thus far in the year.
The scoring barrage did not begin until the 23rd minute when Troy Davis (Gainesville, Va./Patriot) scored by taking advantage of a bad clearing attempt by the Dutchmen.
Less than a minute later, Gabe Nafziger (Crozet, Va./Western Albemarle) sent a through ball up to Andy Chappell Deckert (North Newton, Kan./Newton) who placed the ball in the right corner of the net to up the lead to two.
In the 31st minute Caleb Oakes (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) added a goal sending a line shot from 20 yards out on the left side of the box into the right corner of the goal giving EMU a 3-0 lead going into halftime.
The Royals added a fourth goal in the 58th minute when Chappell Deckert crossed the ball in to Carlos Flores-Melgar (Woodbridge, Va./Gar-Field) who found space on the right side for a goal.
Lebanon Valley cut the deficit in half with two goals in the 65th and 69th minutes, the second goal coming on a penalty kick.
Nafziger would tally the fifth EMU goal in the 80th minute when he took a pass from Kyle Shelton (Bumpass, Va./Spotsylvania) and chipped the ball over the head of the goalkeeper. The Dutchmen would add one last goal in the 84th minute finishing short of a comeback.
Lebanon Valley did outshoot the Royals 32-16, but only had 11 shots on goal as Ahmed Zaatar (Barboursville, Va./William Monroe) had eight saves.
EMU continues on the road as the play at Bridgewater on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 4:00pm. This game is a non-conference game due to the ODAC's unbalanced schedule.
