Box Score 2 EMU's softball women continued their solid play Tuesday at nationally ranked Randolph-Macon. The young Royals held their own, but couldn't crack R-MC's tough pitching staff in suffering a pair of losses.
The women slip to 12-10 overall and 2-6 in ODAC play. They step out of the conference but return home on Wednesday, hosting Mary Washington in a doubleheader at 3:00pm.
No. 24 Randolph-Macon 3, EMU 0
Shortstop Danielle Brenneman (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) led off the game with a double, but after a foul out and strikeout, Brenneman was cut down trying to steal to end the threat. In the second, the Royals got runners on first and second with two outs before a popup turned into the third out.
Those turned out to be the best scoring opportunities against R-MC ace Candace Whittemore, who allowed just three hits.
Meanwhile Kelsi Martin (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) was doing a good job in the circle for EMU. But she hit a bump in the third by giving up a leadoff double. That turned into a two-run frame for the Yellow Jackets. A leadoff single in the fifth came home on a sacrifice fly, providing the final 3-0 margin.
Brenneman, Cassidey Chrisman (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) and McKenzie Reams (Goochland, Va./Goochland) had the women's only hits. Sierra Lantz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) got on with a walk.
No. 24 Randolph-Macon 6, EMU 0
The Royals earned seven base runners in the nightcap, but only once did they get more than one on in a single inning. That was in the fifth when Emily Davis (King George, Va./Fredericksburg Christian) reached on a one-out error and Katelin Martin (Goochland, Va./Goochland) was hit by a pitch. Davis got to third tagging up on a fly ball, but she was stranded there after the third out.
Randolph-Macon, meanwhile, was efficient with their opportunities, scoring four runs over the first three innings. Back-to-back RBI doubles in the sixth bumped the score to 6-0.
Chrisman and Emily Campbell (Broadway, Va./Broadway) had EMU's only singles of the game. Rebecca Crothers (Scottsville, Va./Fluvanna County) and Alia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) each drew a walk.
Campbell also started in the circle and pitched the first 1.2 innings, while Miller threw the final 4.1. Each allowed three runs.
