Royals Wrap Up ODAC Play With Loss To W&L

Box Score

The Eastern Mennonite Volleyball women were simply out-hit by visiting Washington and Lee Tuesday night, dropping their final ODAC contest of the year.

The loss likely ends the Royals' hopes of getting into the eight-team ODAC Tournament. At 4-8 in the conference, the best the women can do in the final standings is finish in a three-way tie for eighth with Randolph and Emory & Henry, with EMU losing out in the ODAC's five-point tie-breaker system.

Eastern Mennonite's four conference wins are the most for the team since 2003, but in this year's topsy-turvy league play, the total seems to not be enough to advance to the postseason.

Currently at 11-12 overall, the Royals are tied for the most wins since the 2001 team finished 14-13. That is also the most recent EMU team to finish .500 or better, leaving this year's women a lot to play for in their three remaining non-conference matches.

That stretch starts Friday with Goucher College, a 7:00pm first serve in Yoder Arena for a Rowdy Royals Match.

Against Washington and Lee, the General made quick jabs early in each set to open up small cushions. Eastern Mennonite had some nice runs, including a 5-1 spurt late in set one, and a 6-0 jab in the second fueled by three straight aces from Abbi Hawkins (Middlebury, Ind./Bethany Christian), but W&L had the answer each time.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-14 and 25-19.

Hannah Johnson (Staunton, Va./Wilson Memorial) had nine kills and seven digs to lead EMU. Meredith Stinnette (Altavista, Va./Altavista) continued her hot play with eight kills on a .333 clip, and Amy Goodman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) added seven kills, as the women hit .174 as a team.

Tori Wigley (Elkton, Va./East Rockingham) put up 25 assists.

Libero Delanie Miller (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) picked up 13 digs, while Tarynn Clark (Goshen, Ind./Bethany Christian) had seven.

Brynne Gould topped W&L with 19 kills and Leah Green added 13.
