Royals Downed by Hornets in Straight Sets

HARRISONBURG, Va. - After a week off, the Royals returned to the court on Wednesday, taking on #25 Lynchburg. 

The Hornets put together a strong home showing, picking up a 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-12) win over EMU.

Highlights

Set One: Lynchburg 25, EMU 13
  • The Hornets jumped out to a 6-0 lead and rode it to a 12-2 advantage through the first 14 points of the match. 
  • Later in the set, EMU was able to pull within seven, 14-7, after an error and a kill by Emma Rogers. But Lynchburg pushed their lead back to double digits with a 4-0 run. 
  • EMU won six of the next nine points, getting kills from Emma Greer and Kenley Smith, along with a Rogers service ace. But once again, Lynchburg answered with another 4-0 run, winning the first set. 
Set Two: Lynchburg 25, EMU 17
  • Kills by Greer, Smith and Jada Parker, brought EMU within one, 5-4, to open the second frame. Lynchburg responded with a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 10-4. 
  • A kill from Rogers and one from Claire Reichenbach, along with a Parker ace, cut Lynchburg's lead to three, 13-10 before a 5-2 run pushed it back to six. Back-to-back Royals kills, one from Parker and one from Lindsay Bly, brought EMU within four, but the Hornets would outscore the Royals 7-3 over the final 10 points, for a 2-0 lead. 
Set Three: Lynchburg 25, EMU 12
  • The Royals jumped out to a 3-2 lead after two errors and a Smith kill. The teams swapped points to 4-3 EMU, before Lynchburg went on an 8-1 run, taking an 11-5 lead. 
  • Later in the set, back-to-back kills from Rogers brought the Royals within four, and they would keep within four to 15-11 after another Rogers kill and one from Kaitlyn Custis
  • Lynchburg would break the set open with a 9-0 run, which was broken up by another kill from Custis. The Hornets, however, wrapped up the sweep with a kill to pick up the win.

What's Next
