Field Hockey Women Score Seven Goals In ODAC Win

Box Score

EMU's field hockey women earned their first ODAC win in a big way, rolling over Ferrum by a final of 7-0 Thursday afternoon in Harrisonburg.

After a scoreless first quarter, Skylar Hedgepeth (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) got the ball rolling in the second with two goals in the span of 3:32. The Royals finished with a 43-3 advantage in shots as they improved to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.

All five of EMU's wins this season have been shutouts.

The women now head into perhaps their toughest test of the season, Saturday's road game at No. 19 Lynchburg. Game time is 2:30pm.

Despite attempting 11 shots in the first against Ferrum, the Royals needed their leading scorer to open the floodgates. Hedgepeth, now with back-to-back seasons of double digit goals to start her career, hit the cage in the 23rd minute with a pass from Keely Mitchell (Virginia Beach, Va./Bayside). In the 26th, she scored again by tipping in a long ball from Rachel Breslin (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) after a corner.

Eastern Mennonite came out of halftime looking to improve on their 2-0 margin, and they did so quickly. Madeline Mast (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) scored from close range just 1:05 into the third, and Julianna Ghally (Aldie, Va./John Champe) did the same another minute later, getting an assist from Morgan Tricarico (Culpeper, Va./Eastern View).

Ghally, in her first game on the field after missing four with an injury, scored again in the 40th, helped by Mast. Assisted by Hedgepeth, Tricarico then notched a goal with five seconds left in the quarter to make it 6-0.

Defender Brandy Troutman (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) finished the scoring after a corner in the 56th minute, drilling in a long shot after a pass from Breslin.

Of EMU's 43 shots, 22 were on goal. Both numbers were season highs.
