Freshman Rachel Breslin (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) had a great start to her collegiate career, caging the game-winner in EMU's 1-0 win over Transylvania on Saturday night.

It was the field hockey team's first win in a season opener since 2010.

The game, played in Tennessee at Sewanee, was originally scheduled for Saturday early afternoon, but was rescheduled to a night game because of lighting. As a result, Eastern Mennonite needs to make a very quick turnaround for their Sunday game against Sewanee that is now scheduled for 11:30am Eastern.

But even the delayed start didn't seem to hinder the Royals against Transylvania. They fired seven shots over the first 35 minutes, including six on goal.

After the intermission, Breslin nearly scored just a few seconds into play, but had a shot stopped. Then after a corner in the 45th minute, the Royals made a few passes inside the circle before Kayla Maret (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) found Breslin for the cager and 1-0 lead.

The women continued to control play as time ticked away, firing three shots in the final three minutes. They wouldn't need the insurance, however, getting the shutout to open the season.

Eastern Mennonite finished with a 13-8 shot advantage, including 10-2 on goal. Breslin put four shots on target, while Lauren Hartzler (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) added three.

Kelsey Troyer (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) saved the only two shots to make it through to her.

Each team earned six corners.
