Box Score 2 EMU's softball women dropped a pair of games at Emory & Henry College Saturday afternoon. The women slide to 17-13 overall and 5-9 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.
The women were orginigally scheduled for back-to-back doubleheaders this weekend, but have rescheduled their stint against Guilford College for Monday afternoon at 3:00.
E&H 4, EMU 3
Game one of the doubleheader looked promising for the Royals, as they jumped out 1-0 in the top of the first frame. EMU had two runners in scoring position after Danielle Brenneman (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) and Sydney Reath (Williamsburg, Va./Mercersburg Academy) both singled to the outfield. Kelsi Martin (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) singled to center field, bringing home the first run of the game.
Neither team saw scoring action until the sixth inning when EMU snagged a couple more runs. With the bases loaded and one out, Sam Breeden (Aroda, Va./Madison County) sent a sacrifice fly to left field, which allowed Michaela Nichols (Luray, Va./Luray) to tag home plate. Makayla Morris (Stanardsville, Va./William Monroe) followed up with a single to center field, allowing Martin to make it 3-0.
The tide quickly changed for EMU, as the Wasps answered with four runs in the same frame. Emory & Henry quickly loaded the bases with zero outs before Martin came in relief. A pair of doubles ended up being the answer for E&H, as they scored four unearned runs before ending the inning. The Royals weren't able to overcome the one-run defecit and fell 4-3.
Reath started in the circle for the Royals and pitched 5.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four. Martin (8-4) finished the final 1.0 and allowed one run on two hits.
E&H 8, EMU 5
The Royals were first to get on the board in game two, with Alia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) reaching first base on a fielder's choice, advancing Reath to third and Brenneman past home plate. This time the Wasps didn't waste time in answering, as they knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first.
EMU got ahead of E&H in the second inning when Morris went yard with one out, 2-1. In the top of the third, Reath was walked and Martin doubled down the leftfield line to get two runners in scoring position. Reath scored after Erin Rockwell (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) reached first on a fielder's choice.
The Wasps answered in a big way as they would go on to score four runs in the bottom of the third. E&H kept control in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two, and in the sixth, scoring one to make it 8-3.
EMU put forth a valid effort in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to come back and win the game. Tiffani Shaheen (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna County) started off the inning with a single, followed up by Reath reaching base off a dropped fly to left field. After a wild pitch both runners advanced with zero outs. Shaheen scored, unearned, after Martin singled to left field. Breeden had an RBI single to left field, making it 8-5. Unfortunately, the scoring would end there as the Royals just fell short.
Miller and Martin split time in the circle. Offensively, Martin went 2-4 in game two and had one RBI. Reath went 1-3 and added a pair of runs.
