Royals Dominate Spring Break, Bring Home Ten Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Eastern Mennonite University softball team leaves Myrtle Beach, S.C. without a loss after going 10-0 at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic. The women are now 11-3 overall and have a ten-day gap to prepare for their home opener against #6 Christopher Newport University on Saturday, Mar. 17.

EMU 4, Mount Aloysius 3
Alia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) hit what ended up being a game-winning double in the top of the seventh to outlast the Mounties, 4-3, on Wednesday afternoon.

The Royals made it a quick 2-0 game in the top of the first after Danielle Brenneman (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) and Tiffani Shaheen (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna County) passed home plate. Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) started off the second inning with a walk and a stolen base to put herself in scoring position. Hoskins then advanced to third on a ground-out hit, which was followed by an RBI single from Brenneman to make it 3-0.

Mount Aloysius got a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning to come within one at 3-2. The Mounties tied things up in the sixth inning after scoring unearned.

Tied at 3-3 in the top of the seventh, Breeden got on base after hitting a single and ended up with the go-ahead run after Miller's RBI double.

The Mounties failed to produce any looks in the bottom of the seventh after a fly out to left field and a couple of ground outs to end the game.

Brenneman and Shaheen were each 2-4 and added a run a piece. Breeden went 2-3 with one run and one RBI.

Miller pitched 4.0 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Kelsi Martin (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer), (5-0), earned the win for EMU allowing only one run on one hit.

EMU 9, Eureka 1
The Royals dominated in their final game of spring break, out-hitting Eureka 14-2. EMU held their opponent scoreless until the bottom of the sixth until the Red Devils got what would be the final run of the game for an ending score of 9-1.

Brenneman was 4-4 with three RBIs and three runs. Shaheen went 2-2 and added a run. Sydney Reath (Williamsburg, Va./Mercersburg Academy) ended with a hit, a run, and a pair of RBIs. Hoskins, Madison Cash (Staunton, Va./Riverheads), Michaela Nichols (Luray, Va./Luray) and Casey Webb (Hampton, Va./Bethel) each added a run en route to the victory.

Reath (3-3) earned a complete win in the circle for the Royals.
