Softball Women Shut Down By Virginia Wesleyan

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

EMU's softball women failed to get their bats firing against No. 1 Virginia Wesleyan (24-0/4-0 ODAC), dropping both games of the ODAC doubleheader. Eastern Mennonite slips to 13-7 overall and 1-3 in the conference.

The women will look to rebound in a set against No. 4 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday. Start time with the Yellow Jackets is in Harrisonburg at 3:00.

VWU 8, EMU 0
The Marlins got on the board quick after a sacrifice fly allowed a runner to reach home plate in the bottom of the first.

Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) was EMU's first baserunner after a two-out single down the line. A followup strikeout left her stranded as the Royals closed another quick offensive inning.

Tiffani Shaheen (Fluvanna, Va./Fluvanna County) hit the second and only remaining hit of the first game, but would be left on base to cap off the Royals best scoring opportunity. The Marlins answered with three runs in the third inning followed by a two-run shot, unearned, in the fourth.

A sac fly in the bottom of the fifth eventually put VWU up 8-0 and would end the game.

Alia Miller (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) threw 2.0+ innings, giving up eight hits and four runs while striking out one. Sydney Reath (Williamsburg, Va./Mercersburg Academy) closed out the final two frames and was tagged for four runs on three hits.

VWU 8, EMU 0
The first two innings were scoreless, but the Marlins struck in the bottom of third after a two-run double. VWU would go on to score three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 5-0 game. The Marlins forced the mercy rule after an RBI double, followed by a two run shot to make the final score 8-0.

Kelsi Martin (Buena Vista, Va./Parry McCluer) pitched 5.2 innings and allowed eight runs on 12 hits, while striking out one. Erin Rockwell (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) went 2-3 with Danielle Brenneman (Waynesboro, Va./Stuarts Draft) notching a hit.
