Final 24 Minutes Sends EMU To ODAC Loss

Box Score

The Royals scored first before a second half explosion gave host Shenandoah a 7-1 win Wednesday afternoon in Winchester, Va. The loss leaves EMU's field hockey women still searching for their first ODAC win.

After utilizing a pair of saves from goalie Kelsey Troyer (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) to dodge a surge from Shenandoah in the opening minutes, Eastern Mennonite (6-9/0-5 ODAC) took over for a 10-minute stretch. Late in the 13th minute, the Royals attempted their fourth penalty corner, capped by a saved shot off the stick of Kayla Maret (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River). Freshman Skylar Hedgepeth (Smithfield, Va./Smithfield) took the rebound right off the SU's goalie and poked it through the legs of a defender to give EMU the lead at the 13:28 mark.

The Hornets (11-4/4-2 ODAC) kept pushing back, however, and finally got an equalizer in the 30th minute.

The game sat tied at 1-1 through halftime and into the 47th minute when Taylor Hayes gave SU their first lead. Hayes scored again a minute later, and the outburst snowballed into a six-goal second half for the Hornets to produce the final margin.

Shenandoah controlled the second half to the tune of 15-2 in shots, and ended with a 28-8 advantage for the game.

Troyer picked up 11 saves for her seventh double digit effort over EMU's last nine games. Brandy Troutman (Mountville, Pa./Hempfield) and Casey Webb (Hampton, Va./Bethel) each added a defensive save.

Hedgepeth and Hannah Nichols (Fredericksburg, Va./Chancellor) each put a pair of shots on goal.

The Royals will look to turn the tables on Ferrum this Saturday when they play at 11:00am as part of Ferrum's Homecoming. The Panthers (3-10/0-5 ODAC) are the only other team without a conference win.
