Box Score Kicking their play into high gear after halftime, EMU's field hockey women scored a pair of goals to earn their first win of the season on Sunday, a 2-1 victory at Ferrum College.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Royals came out a completely different team in the second 35. They fired a shot in the 37th minute and took the first of 12 second-half corners in the 39th.
Alyssa Gore (Virginia Beach, Va./Salem) was the first to hit the cage, tying the score at 1-1 in the 45th minute with an assist from Emily Price (Hampton, Va./Homeschool).
Ten minutes later, Eastern Mennonite took the lead after yet another corner. Senior Emily Augsburger (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) connected on what turned out to be the game-winner, assisted by Lauren Hartzler (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central).
Even with the lead, the Royals kept up the attack and Ferrum did not manage another scoring opportunity. EMU had an 18-1 shot domination in the second half.
It was a lackluster first frame for both teams with a combined two shots on goal, one from each team. The Panthers had a 1-0 lead after an unassisted goal from Kasey Sheets in the 12th minute.
The women ended with a 24-7 advantage in shots. Price fired 11 attempts. Kelsey Troyer (Lancaster, Pa./Lancaster Mennonite) earned the win in between the pipes.
Now 1-1 on the season, the Royals return home for a non-conference contest against Sweet Briar College on Wednesday. Game time in Harrisonburg is 7:00pm.
