Box Score With a flair for the dramatic, Eastern Mennonite University picked up an impressive ODAC road win Wednesday night, toppling Emory & Henry by a final of 3-1. The Royals push into a three-way tie for seventh in the ODAC standings with a record of 2-3.
For EMU's volleyball women (4-10 overall), it was their first conference road win over a team other than Hollins since 2009. The women have not won more than two ODAC matches since that season, and have not made the eight-team ODAC Tournament since 2007.
They will look to keep the momentum rolling this weekend, hosting non-conference North Carolina Wesleyan Friday night before Saturday's ODAC clash with Guilford. The Quakers are 3-2 in conference play after a home sweep of Randolph on Wednesday.
Against Emory & Henry (4-11/2-3 ODAC), the night started with a 3-0 EMU run before the Wasps answered with a 4-0 streak. Although the runs did not continue, the close play did as neither team led by more than two the rest of the set. Emory & Henry scored two in a row to break off a 22-22 tie, but Maria Yoder (Manheim, Pa./Hempfield) got her hands on back-to-back blocks to fend off set points and tie it up at 24-24. Two more points capped a 4-0 run, as Eastern Mennonite stole the opener, 26-24.
The Royals used a six-point streak to gain control early in the second, opening a 7-3 cushion. The women kept the edge the rest of the way, never letting EHC score more than two straight points, as they ran to a 25-15 win.
Eastern Mennonite held a small edge all throughout the third set, eventually serving for match point at 24-22. But the Wasps returned the favor from the first set, scoring four in a row to steal a 26-24 decision to keep the night alive.
The Royals used an early 5-0 run in the fourth to open up a 9-5 lead, but Emory & Henry answered with five of their own to get ahead by one. The women played down by one or two points before forging ties at 17-17 and 20-20. After trailing 22-20, EMU used a 3-0 streak to get in front by one, but the Wasps responded to tie the score at 23-23. From there, each team had a handful of chances to win the set as they were tied at each point until 29-29. Senior setter Jasmine Johnson (Staunton, Va./Robert E. Lee) dumped over a quick kill to get the Royals back up, and Amy Goodman (Midlothian, Va./Midlothian) landed the final kill to the close the night at 31-29.
EMU limited their mistakes to grind out the road win, out-hitting their hosts .129 to .109 and committed six less service errors.
Middle Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) tied her career high with 11 kills to lead the offense. Kara Smith (Hayes, Va./Gloucester) hit .333 from the outside, putting down nine kills with just one attack error. Yoder was key on both sides of the net with seven kills and seven blocks, including two solo. The seven stuffs were a career high for the junior. Jasmine Johnson set up the offense well with 28 assists.
Libero Skyler Johnson (Harrisonburg, Va./Harrisonburg) led all players with 29 digs. Ginny Sorrell (Spotsylvania, Va./Spotsylvania) had 12 digs and two services aces, while Sam Jacob (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had 11 digs and two aces.
