EMU 3, Shenandoah 2
The teams traded unearned runs in the first inning of the opener.
The Royals then gained the edge in the third after Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) and Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) reached to start the inning. With the runners on second and third, Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) poked a single to left center, bringing in both women for a 3-1 lead.
Shenandoah (6-14/2-6 ODAC) went down quietly in the third and fourth, and EMU got out of a jam in the fifth with an inning-ending double play. The Hornets finally cut the margin to one in the sixth with a two-out rally, but neither team scored in the seventh as the Royals held on for the win.
Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) (6-2) earned the complete game win from the circle, scattering eight hits.
Foltz had two of EMU's six hits. Alexa Sheets (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) singled and walked.
EMU 3, Shenandoah 0
Reath took to the circle in the nightcap, and got the offense going in the second with a leadoff double. Cassidey Chrisman (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) brought her in with a two-out single for the 1-0 lead.
The Royals' speed triggered another run in the third, started by Hoskins reaching base on an error. Then when Foltz put down a sacrifice bunt, the speedy Hoskins tried to go from first to third, triggering a throw from SU's first baseman that went wild and allowed Hoskins to score.
In the seventh, Hoskins scored another unearned run, this time coming in from second on a muffed throw at first on Foltz's grounder.
Reath, meanwhile, was cruising. She did not allow a hit out of the infield after the fourth inning and at one point earned 10 straight outs. SU struck a two-out rally in the seventh, but Reath coaxed out one final grounder to preserve the shutout.
The Royals had a 7-3 advantage in hits in the second game. Reath improved to 7-1 with the win.
Chrisman finished 2-3 with an RBI. Hoskins was 2-4 with two runs scored.
