Box Score 2 Some days don't go as planned, as Sunday was one of those days for the Royals.
EMU's softball women failed to get their bats firing against visiting Guilford College (19-6/4-2 ODAC), dropping both games of the ODAC doubleheader. Eastern Mennonite went 1-3 in their home doubleheaders over the weekend, and has lost five of six, to slip to 13-5 overall and 1-5 in the ODAC.
The Royals head to Shenandoah (6-12/2-4 ODAC) on Tuesday, with the twinbill starting at 4:00pm in Winchester, Va.
Guilford 5, EMU 1
The Quakers, easily the best-hitting team in the conference with a .386 team batting average, got on board first with a solo homerun to start the second.
Eastern Mennonite had just one base runner over the first three innings, and wasted a great scoring chance in the fourth when Beck Hoskins (Danville, Va./Westover Christian Academy) and Mariah Foltz (Broadway, Va./Broadway) stood on second and third after leadoff hits but failed to come in.
Guilford blew open their 1-0 lead in the fifth, scoring four runs in a crucial two-out rally. They had five hits in the inning.
Cassidey Chrisman (Staunton, Va./Riverheads) hit a two-out single to get her team going in the bottom of the seventh. After a walk and single loaded the bases, Hoskins flipped a single to left to bring in pinch runner Michaela Nichols (Luray, Va./Luray). Mariann Smith (Hood, Va./Madison County) was also waved around on the hit but was tagged out at home after a perfect throw from the left fielder, ending the rally and the game.
The Royals had nine hits in the game, including two hits each from Alexa Sheets (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby), Hoskins, Foltz and Chrisman.
Sydney Reath (Chambersburg, Pa./Mercersburg Academy) (6-1) allowed one run in 3.0 innings and took her first loss of the year. Lauren Seale (Madison, Va./Madison County) pitched the final 4.0.
Guilford 14, EMU 5 – 5 innings
The Royals started in the hole in the second game, giving up three runs in the top of the first. Seale drove in Hoskins with a two-out single in the bottom of the frame, but Guilford added two more in the second for a 5-1 lead.
After an EMU pitching change in the third, the Quakers took full control with a six-run third. The Royals plated two in the bottom of the third, but GC brought in three more in the fourth for a 14-3 lead.
The women had the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, and Sheets brought in two runs with a single to center, but a pop up to shortstop cut off the comeback as the game ended on the mercy rule.
Hoskins went 1-2 with two walks, scoring a run, and stole her 10th base of the season. Seale was 1-2 with a walk, accounting for two runs. Maria Sinni (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) had a single and two walks, while Taylor Hensley (Orange, Va./Orange County) reached base twice.
Sheets pitched 2.0 innings and took the loss.
Coach J.D. McCurdy said his team is seeing the increase in talent around the ODAC:
